Why haven't you purchased a $10,000 FGPA to quickly encode AVIF images yet anon? You're not poor, right?

They obliterate standard GPUs in quality yet are still exponentially faster than CPUs. AVIF quality through standard GPUs is a mistake. It's like using preset 10 throught svt-av1.

I am poor. But I need not worry, because AMD will make FPGAs cheap in the future.

That's weird, I thought they only were good for hardware emulation.

Compressing cartoon depictions of little girls of course.

They're precursors for the ASICs on GPUs but since the latter are expected to consume like 0.1 of power under load a lot of quality ends up being sacrificed.

Fixed function hardware is really good at one thing but it's impossible to scale up. That's why DAV1D is still used widely over asic decoding.

A $10,000 chip for what, a 5-10ms difference to encode an image?

It's encoding about 1488 4K resolution AVIF images with (assuming since it's an FPGA) preset 8 compression efficiency.

Which CPU can do that?

They're good for any domain where you can't justify taping out an ASIC but still need custom architecture. FPGAs enable heebs on wallstreet to make billions by programming them solely to process and shit out a bajillion stock orders a second over ethernet for example
