Anytime someone posts anything related to AI on Reddit everyone's hating on it calling it slop or whatever. Do people not realize the substantial positive impact it will likely have on their lives and society in the near future?

Reddit is a place full of envy and insecurity, everyone's already hated on people better than them like artists, good programmers, or richer people

AI just channeled that, now instead of crying about artists tracing it's about AI, instead of crying about programmers doing manual memory management it's about AI, instead of crying about landlords it's about AI and so on

No, most of the western world only knows ai as something you can make cute avatar pics with, oh and that 'gibliii anime thing'

The vast majority that actually knows about ai likes or accepts it as the next step in technology, coders are less happy since they realise they are being replaced, so are a LOT of jobs, but most people don't realise it yet.

For example, ALL administrative jobs will disappear, that's going to be a big shake up in the work force. Blue collar jobs will take the longest to replace, since robotics is EXPENSIVE and a lot more difficult than replacing purely digital jobs.

There is pretty much 2 dominant factions for Ai online everywhere. One faction want AI to accelerate as much as possible in hopes that it leads to a post abundance society. Another Faction believes AI needs to be stopped as it is gonna destroy human society or good

So there is a constant bickering with anything related to AI between these 2 groups

I think it's deeply funny when AI bros like yourself go "no dude, 2 more weeks!".

Have LLMs improved a lot over the past 5 years? Sure. Will they ever get to a usable state for human replacement? Extremely unlikely. I can see retarded companies trying to brute force the replacement too early, and poisoning the whole well, though.

At best, they might allow some jobs to have reduced human participation, but when teams get fired and the replacement fucks everything up, there's going to be a lot of backlash against companies using this shit anywhere forward facing, and those are ironically the jobs that are most solvable with LLM slop.

i think there has been a misunderstanding

in my experience "coders" are the most vocal about AI being shit because, for at least most of them, they know how it works instead of perceiving it as magic like most normies do, and also their job takes precision and cognizance that they know LLMs are fundamentally incapable of. any company replacing coders with AI is basically just laying off and giving the AI thing as an excuse, because it does not do much except offer a type of rubberduck and autocomplete for most people. maybe the dumbasses working in frontend web dev can more consistently use it, i don't know.

i'm still a doomer wrt software dev but mainly because it is a very superfluous and unproductive job when it comes to products people actually want. a huge chunk of software dev jobs are powered by speculation and business 2 business stuff, which means it's very sensitive to economic downturns. we've been training so many fucking software devs in the past few years, and we're just about to deal with the end of the biggest debt cycle ever. things look grim. though they do look almost as grim for everyone else

>Ruin Google search until AI is good, then ruin AI.
But seriously, capabilities are overhyped and the hype primarily exists to suppress engineer wages.

The larger firms got spooked by how much cultural and political leverage the engineer class had amassed, and started the synchronized push-back in the ~6 months leading up to the initial OpenAI hype cycle in late 2022.

All of their products have gotten substantially shittier, but they're confident that their users don't have any other viable alternatives. What are you going to do, pay for Kagi and use the Fediverse? No, you're going to just deal with double the ads, search that doesn't return what you were looking for, and a web player that hangs ft you hit play too fast and requires a browser refresh to fix it thereby serving you even more ads. Eat the slop you fucking chump.

they have been successfully drafted in the war to pull up the ladder and make sure only huge corpos like Universal/Disney can ever use AI tools so they can undercut production costs in a way nobody else can, ensuring nobody will ever be able to compete legally.
this will be accomplished by spreading FUD about made up dangers (le AGI) and poor artists losing work to AI (if they're so bad to lose work to AI now just imagine when it will get actually good) in order to corral people into demanding draconian AI regulations, since we are talking about reddit level IQ people it will be easy to make them believe these regulations will totally only be used to defend the consumer and the artists againts the big corps

2. Generative AI makes it easy for lazy, scammers, and grifters to achieve what they want.
3. Some people are using it as a crutch. They lack the ability to research and critical thinking, so they have generative AI do it for them instead.

Generative AI is a nice tool. Iโ€™ve used it for brain storming ideas, make my resume more ATS compliant, etc.

Current AI development is on track to give us a future that is somwhere on a spectrum.

On one end of the spectrum you have AI development being slow and within our lifetime only making the internet unusable and putting massive train on our electric grid for almost 0 benefit. Lot of the medial AI that is saving lives is for the most part very much separated from the everyday Generative AI that for the most part just spams internet with garbage. And even said medical and research AI systems are highly overrated. Alphafold didnt make drug development 2 times faster, and lot of the systems used for diagnosing diseases do well in test environments but sometimes fuck up more then regular doctors in edge cases that were not in the training data.

On the other end of the spectrum you have AGI and perfected robotics automating all jobs, making all people unemployed and left to starve. UBI is a stupid system that will not work long term and the argument of "but who will buy stuff if everyone is unemployed?" is dumb. When people cant buy anything then businesses that sell stuff to people will go bankrupt, but businesses that pivot to selling to AI companies will survive. Field used for growing corn and then selling it to cow farms so people can eat beef will instead sell the corn to ethanol plants so that they can then use it to generate more electricity for the AI. UBI in this equation is just a state mandated socialism where companies are robbed their money so that the same money can then be given back to them for resource exchange, which in terms of market forces is perverted and will eventually lead to extermination of the massive leeching class.

Both scenarios fucking suck and are significant downgrade from what we had before AI, and even middle spectrum scenarios where everyone works some terrible manual labor for third worlder wage and then go home to watch AI generated movies while you wait for robotics to get you extinct is even worse.

People who don't want to see AI slop can just not watch Universal/Disney movies, and people who want to watch pretty pictures with no meaning can just consume their Universal/Disney AI slop. I would be much happier if only dumb megacorps were the ones posting AI garbage instead of random third worlders and guys with defunked Crypto mines spamming the internet as part of their hustle to get paid 100 dollars a week from letting their PC run overnight to put further strain on internet infrastructure.

Robotics are expensive only because most current robots are custom build and its cheaper to hire some retard to put box A into place B then to build a whole system for moving boxes from A to B. This is why everyone is so horny about humanoid robots, because they are universal and can be put into every retard position, and when your shitty business goes bankrupt in half a year you can sell the robot. So you will either end up with future where people either work for less then the price of robots, which will become cheaper over time, or everyone loses their jobs.

Also the whole idea that we will have AGI before useful manual labor robots isnt 100% guaranteed. Current AI models are still for the most part completely useless thanks to hallucinations and no short term memory, and we saw this massive jump in performence in generative AI over a span of just few years, so its not impossible that in just one year we could have robots as dexterous as humans because we suddenly figure out how to harvest data well for them or create useful world model.

Every company replacing staff with AI is setting itself up for failure. AI has no accountability, so when it hallucinates a massive software bug, the person responsible is the retard who replaced their staff with an AI. That's not sustainable for a business environment.

All of this shit is fucking retarded. So much "research" is based on emulating sci fi bullshit like humanoid robots, or larping that LLMs are going to magically become intelligent. We need to instead focus on integrating existing tech properly. We are making negative progress at the moment chasing this fantasy shit while cannibalizing functioning tech and institutions. It's all retarded Burgerland thinking "if I can imagine it (just like in my scifi books) and try really super duper hard, it will heckin become reality!!!". Actually no. Innovation comes from a solid base of functional society/tech, not a house of cards of rent-seeking fictions.

Again this is massively overestimating AI. Even if the slow drain with 0 benefit assumes that generative AI can continue to create profit forever, it can't. And the argument of "Who will buy stuff if everyone is unemployed?" is valid because those companies that sell stuff to people won't just disappear. Coca Cola funded entire private armies to ensure their business model remain untouched, and AI doesn't drink coke.

If you want an example of just how fucktarded AI actually is, just go watch Claude play Pokemon for a bit. You'll quickly realize the clueless pillock can't even navigate out of a 2D box without massive amounts of help from a framework guiding it and giving it hints from the game's RAM. This is the thing people are worried will steal their jobs.

And before someone says something like "Well this is right now, in the future this will be even better at any digital task than humans." How do you expect anyone to ever trust this shit when all examples of it having real-world integration results in it being less coordinated than literal toddlers? Nobody is going to trust this with anything important. Anyone who does gets exactly whta is coming to them.

Awesome so we'll have 95% as stupid AI as we have right now running on hardware that nobody can afford to replace people who are required to consume in order for that market to succeed.

You're ignorant of one important fact: The current players in the market aren't just going to 'go away'. There is no laying down or dying for a company like Coca Cola. Lots of retarded AIs being ran on people's GPUs isn't going to make them disappear. It will instead be used as an example of why it'll need to be banned from industrial use, and that will be the end of that .

NTA but how does that change anything? So the AI gets smaller and more people can run it, it's still not going to be any closer to generating infinite profit selling to itself. It can't consume anything but electricity and it needs humans to produce things.

the good ai future is 99% of humanity on ubi and tiny elite ascending into godhood
it fully replaces human labor with capital. The outcome of that is it becomes borderline impossible for someone not already rich or politically connected to go up in social class.
The only way of escaping will be going into politics and scheming your way to the top.

If you are neither of those when full human replacement arrives it's over. I think you need at least $10M for the non-politics way.

At the same time, poor people are happy because the living standards will skyrocket and they can stop working. This explains big acceptance in the third world. People who think of themselves as temporarily embarrassed millionaires hate it because they realize their relative social standing will drop (being on ubi in India and on ubi in america will be the same) with no realistic hope of changing it.

People hate change. They form their notion of their dream life based on things that came before them or before they were adults and when their time comes to go out into the world and live their lives, things have changed. All I wanted to do was to get a chemical engineering degree and manage my own small distillery producing ethanol from sugarcane in the countryside and selling it to gas stations and then I would be able to afford to have my own truck and small plane powered by a portion of my own biofuel production (I live in the Brazilian Midwest, 80% of cars here can run on ethanol) but now the big companies are starting to invest in 2nd gen ethanol production with enzymes and also efuels are obviously going to be big but these are all much more complex and expensive processes, not feasible for small producers. Then there's also China now developing cheap sodium batteries which means BEVs will rule the roads and the market for biofuels will significantly shrink, further slashing my hopes of pursuing my dream. My point is, Redditors are probably the kind of people who had a dream, wanted to break into and have sucess in some industry that is now kind of ruined by AI. Maybe something art related where they feel the added productivity makes them feel less useful and erodes their identity and pride in their work.

But it's not 'smart'. The smart part comes from how well you can configure the input to get out the optimal outputs.
It also doesn't have to be 'smart' to get useful outputs.
How you coerce those outputs via inputs is the skill. And that is a human skill.
People seem to miss this point. Or at least very few people seem to understand that there is a power gap opening up.
