I've tried xmonad but didn't like it. I always tend to gravitate back to either dwm or awesomewm. I prefer dwm though simply because I hate Lua.

go ahead and emerge -aqvuDN gentoo-sources after throwing -dracut -gpm build and a few other things into make.conf so you can actually learn how to configure your kernel
then you're going to use ugrd and/or rEFInd so you can dual boot gentoo and windows properly
once thats done set up a minimal environment with what you learned and dist-kernel but for WSL2 from within windows just so you can access your gentoo install and chroot or whatever you need to either run wsl2 or access real gentoo from inside it
