Why does this happen? Who are they even fooling? You can tell it's not a real png because it doesn't even render right.

when the situation is bleak it usually helps to

Use startpage.com and set type to Transparent Background. Also make sure you open the original image (use "Copy URL") and don't use the thumbnail.
