Anyone notice all modern open source softwares coming from EU, especially Germany, have shady monetization goals? Like they always form a company, soon or later have a plugin/app store, and more often than not sold to some holding company.
Makes me avoid any new stuff.

Probably because, in the US, if you have the skillset to build something impressive that's open source, you could instead get a job that pays a yummy salary with those same skills. Those jobs are less prevalent and pay more in Europe.

Because in Europe small businesses drown in taxes, so either you work for a big business (and probably have to go to the USA for that) or you publish your stuff open source, or you just give up coding.

Europeans have much more leisure time to devote to interests outside of work. The US increasingly has a culture of young men "grinding" outside of their normal working hours on other revenue streams rather than pursuing something for enjoyment or altruism.

Even though FOSS projects aren't competing in the traditional sense it's still a better ecosystem to have multiple projects with similar goals and for a "survival of the fittest" type scenario where the best projects lead the market. Everyone just piling into the same projects won't create better results, it would just cause development to stagnate due to disagreement, infighting and people quitting.
