What is the point of scalable fonts?
I have yet to see any advantage over bitmap fonts at all. I googled but I only see people saying that bitmap fonts look blurry or pixelated when scaled, but that is exactly what "scalable" fonts are! Bitmap fonts are always crisp and clear, it is scalable fonts that are blurry and ugly. Am I experiencing a different reality or something?

Pic related, it's "scalable" fonts in the menubar, and a bitmap font (Terminus) below. Which one do you think is blurrier?

WHY are bitmap fonts not supported anymore and WHY am I forced to look at this disgusting garbage?

Can someone PLEASE explain???

it's cheaper and easier to make different sizes of the same font using vector graphics. they do look terrible. use gnu unifont, as it supports the largest number of glyphs of all bitmap fonts.

Checked. I agree with you. I hate how blurry every font is. They're making it impossible to enable bitmaps in systems and some have removed the support for them completely.
Some automatically scaled shit will never compare to meticulously handcrafted pixel-perfect font.
If it was easier to enable bitmap fonts globally I would like to make my own bitmap font with multiple weights and sizes but it's almost impossible now.
I've made my own psfu fonts for the TTY.

The magiw word is hinting. You need a font with embedded hints ideally although there is autohinting which is kinda meh
It aligns vector fonts to the pixel mask.

Everything is trying to make me not use bitmap fonts.
I downloaded bitmap fonts from https://github.com/masaeedu/bitmap-fonts, added to /usr/share/fonts/bitmap, but only Terminus shows up in Cinnamon or Mousepad font selection. The fonts do show up in fc-list, but I can't use them anywhere. I replaced absolutely everything with Terminus, but I still want to use other bitmap fonts. I didn't do sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig because I'm on Arch. I reinstalled fontconfig but that probably didn't do anything.
