I own an rtx 4060 which is not the most powerful, but by all means not a weak gpu.
I've seen games like spiderman 2 struggle, but games like stalker anomaly run pretty well.
Of course, spiderman has better graphics, but at what cost? Stalker anomaly doesn't look bad! Just not as polished and a bit more square.

So, should graphics stop evolving? Should we go back a few years and have a bit simpler graphics to increase performance? Because to be honest, I don't really look at the graphics after a few hours.

The problems of graphics and optimization are separate issues.
The problem with optimization is that game engines became too bloated and no one wants to invest in making their own engine anymore.
The problem with graphics is about aesthetics. If you're going for realism reflections and good lighting are all you need. Cool new effects are often abused to show off the new technology. But after Raytracing anything else wouldn't add much overhead.

i thought that long ago, but now i realize i can still be amazed at visuals with the games of today, like Greece in AC Odyssey or London in Watch Dogs Legion, even with my RTX 3050, as long as i can get a smooth 60 fps with Lossless scaling. I think frame rate is the most important thing to appreciate visuals. Funny that it was the norm for 3d arcade games in the early 90s. Makes Daytona USA still a blast to play today.

You can optimize the rendering pipeline without sacrificing visual quality. Just look how Valve's source engine held up for a decade after it was made. Doom 2016 is another good example.

developers need to relearn the art of the shader, shaders are incredibly powerful , and can produce amazing visual results, back in the day video cards had very limited resources so efficient and creative use of shaders went a long way, you can look at a game like hl2 and the water shader is gorgeous , yet it runs fast on archaic hardware , games have stagnated visually for the last 10-15 years, in part due to knowledge and expertise loss as pioneer in graphics either retired or moved to high positions, shaders in todays games are bloated and inefficient, and devs are increasingly making use of ray tracing to fix their lighting instead of investing in shaders which modern cards are extra ordinarily powerful for.

We spend 20 years building 2D games and finally get a home console that could have provided us decades of amazing 2D graphics and the real arcade experience at home. What does the industry do? It shits out horrible looking 3D shit for the next 20 years. They didn't even bother to give you a proper controller to play them. So you had to suffer through tank controls on your d-pad or buying a controller aftermarket with analog sticks. All the work in progress projects that would have provided us with cartoon/anime level graphics got canceled to shit out horrible looking polygon abominations where every character was comprised of 5 triangles total and the backgrounds were shitty overly compressed jpegs. Wow so immersive.

Modern shit is just the same thing with another gimmick slapped on it. "Realistic graphics" has always been ass. Just watch a fucking movie at that point. I only care about cute anime girls and looney toons-like slapstick animation. Perfection must be sought through 2D. Since 3D is ugly. Who the fuck wants to replicate the 3DPD walking around in our society? If I wanted to be horrified I'd just go outside.

you can really appreciate their design and take it all in, it's really quite beautiful what they did in these older games
but I agree that it feels quite small and cramped
it does ruin the atmosphere in some parts because you can see the enemies and parts of the map from afar, which they didn't intend to be possible
and in fact it ruins chapter 2 which is the most memorable part of the game because of how easily you can see your destination and navigate a very dangerous area, so I wouldn't recommend it for a first playthrough (stick to the default range of 20-300%)

before that 3d graphics looked like polygonal junk that was clearly a machine struggling to form some simulacrum of the real world. but from that point on artists have been able to create their vision.

I think you can tackle the low performance problem in two non-exclusive points:
1. Engines are not made "ad hoc" anymore, but they rely on an engine that is not optimized for a specific game;
2. Developers try to achieve a useless level of realism (e.g., in what scenario does seeing baby hair on a character improve the user experience?) instead of studying art direction.
In my opinion, both are derived from developer and directors incompetence.

Good post. I would just add that while UE5 gets a lot of hate, actually as an off the shelf engine it is really good. For games outside the scope of what the engine is good at though (as you point out), you will need to modify or extend the engine to support that instead of trying to shoehorn the features you want into their existing systems. There are plenty of examples of this being used to great effect both from AAA and even AA devs. Building an entirely new engine is unfeasible for most developers.

Another great point. Redditors and journos like to pretend that "workers" are magical creatures that can do no wrong and any bad element of a game is 100% a function of managers' greed/incompetence (while at the same time and good element in a game is 100% a function of the worker's genius). This is a ridiculous idea and can be immediately proven wrong when you consider that some countries are better than others at making games and in general have better art direction and/or code quality. And the expected variability between managers between countries is not as great as that of developers. So there is clearly a developer factor here too beyond the directors/managers. It should be obvious that both developers and directors need to be good but somehow it became controversial among some retards.

They did, after 2007. Sans a few rare exceptions, the later game graphics have gotten WORSE AND WORSE, all while in-world physics and interaction have all but disappear completely.

It's gotten to a point where a literal 10 yo games (from 2015, mind you) tend to look BETTER, because the image clarity and stability are far superior, on top of the games running at least 60fps on mid-end hardware from the early 2010s.

Heck, just a couple years ago I finally got around playing the Yakuza 0 for the first time. It's essentially a PS3 game at heart, uses an older, proprietary Forward Rendering engine, and it looks GORGEOUS. I was thrilled to have a super sharp image quality in 2023, all while running the game with 2x Super Sampling, all highest settings, and still rocking 60fps nonstop on a GTX 1060 + 2nd gen Intel i7.

I completely agree on this take. Even back in the day I hated the 3D graphics that 5th gen consoles (and similar PCs) were shitting out, for me the 3D graphics in the 3DO, PSX and Saturn felt like we had regressed back to the Atari 2600 and early NES days. The industry should've taken better advantage of their 2D graphics potential, that for the first time came close to the NeoGeo in affordable platforms without coinop-style arcade games-only autism. Unfortunately we are in the minority and most kids creamed themselves over those shitty 3D graphics, even if they were just NPCs following the trend.
6th gen 3D graphics had finally become good enough for me to enjoy, though. I was amazed by the 3D graphics on the Dreamcast.

What happened to the Saturn was a crime against nature and I can't believe Sega allowed themselves to be pulled along with it. They designed the perfect console for making amazing 2D games to play in the home and they just let it die for no reason. Think about what it had.

Then they rug pull everyone and end support in America just a couple of years later ruining their reputation forever. All while Japan got an amazing library of 2D games that actually took advantage of what the system could do.

I don't understand how they fucked it up so badly. They knew 3D wasn't ready for the home market yet. They knew people wanted stuff like arcade perfect ports of the vastly popular fighting games that were tearing up the arcades at the time. They knew people wanted more 2D sonic games. They'd already had plenty of beta testing with the Sega CD and knew shit like FMV games weren't what people wanted. But they went full retard anyway.

Then they turn around and manage to make the Dreamcast which people loved and which had better 3D graphics than the PS2. But they manage to fuck that up too because they didn't include a DVD-ROM.

The 4080/Super is still in the top 5 and really all the GPUs from 9070 on up can be called the same top end capable class of cards. And the 5090 is essentially just a 4090 that keeps the same perf/power ratio up to 600 watts.

Modern games have mostly enhanced graphical fidelity without really enhancing the gameplay experience. There is no game that currently exists that requires high res graphics to be a game. AAA and real games are a minority now. The majority (and mavority of revenue) is playing games like genshin. Live service, f2p, p2w, low-quality graphics games with lootbox mechanics.

The graphical sweet spot was 2008, PC gaming.
We had hardware.
We had some good game engines.
We had Zoey. Zoey, from Left 4 Dead. She was perfect. The perfect amount of polygons, and perfect performance, the perfect voice acting, perfect lighting, all of it.

The challenge of photorealism I think is a worthy pursuit, but it doesn't draw me in (as a dev, or a gamer) and I'm certainly not going to sacrifice any part of the experience, or pay extra for it.

What we need are memorable, remarkable, creative Graphics-with-a-capital G. For that there's some stuff we should bring back the past , but many more horizons to explore - stuff we've never seen or thought to try. Creative innovation keeps happening so I'm not worried in the slightest for the medium.

Stalker is proof that graphics mean shit, I still mainly play the mods and originals on my 16gb card. The problem isn't that we need do stop evolving graphics, its working with the current tech we have instead of immediately moving to the next shiny new object.

Nintendo back in the day hated loading screens so they avoided discs for as long as possible during the n64 days. Some either PS2 or PS3 devs (I cannot remember which) said they could have do some much with these consoles and they really havent hit their true potential (like exploring new techiniques to get the most out of development, similar to Sega devs) however, moving on to the next big release was the thing to do.

If you don't need moving light then something like Mirror's Edge (2008) is the perfect sweetspot, just slightly higher poligon count on models and you have a nearly photorealistic game with good physics which runs at 240fps on your embedded graphics card.

For me, about 2012-2013 is about as far as I need to go. I would say graphics were still getting significantly better until 2018 or so for a few games a year. After that its debateable. Games are taking too long to make, and have little to no new gameplay features. Roll it back to 2012/late PS3/early PS4. I like to compare BF4 -> BF1 -> BF5 -> BF2042. BF4 looks fine compared to 2042, although each game does look better on the highest settings. I almost want to say 5 is the best looking game in the series.
