Anyone else too scared to use their CRTs these days with how few are out there? On one hand it makes sense to use it while I still have time and are reasonably young since it's in good condition having sat in the attic for 18 years, but on the other hand part of me wants to go ahead and use a backup that's already well worn and in worse condition despite questioning the value of such an investment. I don't know what to do and I am just paralyzed by fear. The tube is my precious, so after all why shouldn't I use it?

Nope. You're gonna die someday, and then all your shit will be thrown out. Might as well enjoy it now.

I guess putting it off because the time just ain't right or because you aren't feeling well has its own cost.

I have a Sony BVM-20F1U with low hours, and I understand how you feel OP. Enjoy it while you can. Technology is meant to be used, not for show.

How much do they cost now? I have a 19" Samsung SyncMaster from early 2000s sitting in the basement. Should I sell?

probably about $200 usd, sometimes more or less depending on your location. Prices on them have gotten retarded especially for any gdm models, I love seeing people buying fw900s for 3k only to have the flybacks kill themselves for design flaws and having to pay $500 for a new one, if they can find one and are capable of replacing it. But that's a leap anwyays considering they went from $500 to 2k+ since linus tranny tips made that video, and his entire audience are low iq zoomies who aren't fixing anything

If you use a CRT only for games and such, it'll last you forever, assuming no electronic faults - though fortunately most electronic faults you'll face are easy enough to fix.
I've been using my NEC FE1250 as my main beater tube close to 5 years now, and seen no degradation whatsoever. It did break down once, but it was just cracked solder joints, trivial thing to repair.
I still have a fucking Sony GDM-F520 sitting in a corner collecting dust, waiting for the day this FE1250 finally blows up. But at this rate this FE1250 will outlive me, and I'll regret never using the GDM-F520 more.

Only a tiny fraction of them are worthwhile using. And there's far more demand for them than there is supply.

They have better motion clarity than any modern monitors, and the higher end units have incredible picture quality and support quite high resolutions and refresh rates. They're quite excellent for modern games too. Must have if you play any 2d games, as those are all typically 60hz locked and only CRTs can display that without motion blur.
