This isn't even a supported usecase btw. It's only still on the system for sysv init script compatibility and maintainers' random crimes against computing instead of patching properly.

by system shell I don't mean the interactive shell, I mean the shell that runs scripts in the background. I use zsh as my interactive.

Dash is the default sh on Debian and Debian-based distros because they explicitly made the decision to use Dash (hence the 'D' in Dash; it stands for Debian). Most Linux distros use Bash by default for both system and interactive shells.

Dash is smaller and faster, but doesn't support some convenience features offered by Bash.

I've never used bash and thought "wow, this is too fucking slow for my use case." Seems like a waste of time to learn a new shell if there's no concrete benefit.

It's for the myriad of scripts that run on startup. Using Dash instead of Bash apparently makes a noticeable difference.

dash is a relic from back when boot times were bottlenecked by sysvinit. there's no reason to not just use bash for system shell on loonix anymore

Boot times were never bottlenecked by init.
Although, if youโ€™re rebooting more than once a year youโ€™re a retard anyway.
We had 3 and 4 year uptime on XP for Chris's sakes. Do likewise gents.
Boot times with systemd are way up over what it used to be. Bait and switched.
Unix system() std library call runs everything under the system shell, and thatโ€™s a lot of unnecessary shit if youโ€™re running the bash shell.

Iโ€™m running the original Bourne shell from BSD sources compiled with pcc and tcsh for interactive shell like god intended.
> b-b-but csh considered harmful
All fixed decades ago. Besides, all scripting is done with โ€˜shโ€™ anyway.
