An XFCE not beholden to GNOME would be great. 4.16 got fucked over.

I like XFCE
It fits in the perfect sweet spot of not being too resource intensive but also being easy to use for my laptops and VMs.

Still the best GTK desktop out there. Has always been running on at least one of my PCs. Cinnamon is a close second, and MATE is a close third (even though it's pretty much redundant and its contributors should just gang up with Xfce or Cinnamon at this point).

I have no love for freetards or Linux in the slightest, but on the rare occasions I have to work with a gui Linux box this desktop is the only one that doesn't stink or crash, even if it does look a little dated. I'm cool with the rodent.

I've always used XFCE. Even on my daily driver with thread ripper and multiple GPUs for AI purposes.

I literally don't see why you should use another desktop manager instead?

>looks the best
>snappiest with lowest input latency
>very low resource usage

I'm not being pedantic or rhetorical. I actually don't know why someone would use something else. Can anyone give me a short list of arguments against XFCE and in favor of other desktop managers?

There are none, I love the rat. Though I would appreciate some changes, given the recent GTK development... Xfce devs were pretty vocal about this in XApp channel, and there were even some experimental builds of Thunar with Qt6, thanks to new bindings for C. I really hope they go this path, GNOME and GTK literally destroyed linux ecosystem.

I've never liked XFCE but then I tried Archcraft and it's lightyears ahead of anything else I've seen. I honestly recommend you try it out.

the problem with traditional x sessions like xfce is that your lock screen mechanism fails open. if the xscreensaver process crashes, your desktop is unlocked. compare this with gnome where the locking is handled by gdm. if gdm crashes, all wayland sessions die and gdm restarts to the initial logon screen.

I think the only reason to use something other than XFCE would be something like KDE Plasma if you just want all the flashy visual effects and even more customization. Or maybe something like Cinnamon if you want something that resembles Windows out of the box (but it takes like 5 minutes to change the toolbar to be like Window's, pic rel).

I was trying LXQt earlier today and I was surprised at how many dependencies I needed just for it and it felt less responsive than XFCE, the slightly less resource usage didn't seem worth it.

The mouse is good
