why can't bios settings be stored on some kind of ROM?
why the fuck does it need 24/7 power?

Nigga they are stored in a ROM. The battery is for powering RTC circuit inside the chipset.

CR2032: common but only lasts a few years
Bigger lithium batteries: can last for decades but hard to find, sometimes used on enterprise equipment, often soldered because they can last like 30 years
Supercap: limited lifetime, only hold charge for days/weeks, soldered, can leak, usually last longer than a CR2032
NiMh/NiCd/Alkaline: just don't.

yeah, until you realize that there is no such thing as a storage medium called "EFI variables", just like there is no storage medium called "Boot Sector".

But rather, those ominous EFI variables are stored inside an NVRAM, which is cheap shit that slowly gets destroyed by write operations.

Your "enterprise product" that highly depends on NVRAM doesn't use it because its le high quality, they use it because they are required to implement mandatory government approved spyware and the NSA certs are inside that NVRAM.

Every UEFI uses NVRAM, but gaymer boards also use the CMOS to store a checksum, and if that checksum is missing, the variables are reset.
>that slowly gets destroyed by write operations.
How often do you think new variables are written?

no they are not stored in a ROM. Rom is read only. READ ONLY MEMORY. They are stored in an EPROM. The battery is for the eprom.

for the same reason it gets wiped when you short out the clrtc pins despite not removing the battery
it's just an intentional thing that was programmed in, even if the settings are stored on bios, removing the battery means you are most likely attempting to reset your bios, most people don't even know the clrtc pins exist, it's a QoL thing.

Which means that those gaymer products are better, since they don't rape an NVRAM.
>how often do you think efi variables are written
In enterprise products?
Probably every update, since they need to keep the spyware running. Bullshit like crowdstrike will rape that as well, since they have to fuck around with the boot process on every level.

They have to do it too, only a checksum is in the RTC as an emergency recovery of sorts.

Somebody should invent a ROM that you could write to more than once. And since it's already hooked up to electricity, you could find some way to use the electricity to do the erasing.
Then you just have to think of a clever name for this electrically erasable and programmable read-only memory. Something catchy like Dr. Humphrey's Magical Electrically Erasable and Programmable Read Only (but not really) Memory Chip That Doesn't Need a Fucking Battery. Or maybe shorten it up some. idk.

when you save a file to a usb you can keep (read/write) the file saved for 10 years without power
maybe ROM wasn't the correct term, maybe just put a fucking 100MB flash chip on the mobo?
