I have a lot of classic game roms and I'm wondering what handheld device I should go with. I would like an OLED screen so I'm looking at a Retroid, Odin 2 Portal, or Steam Deck. I already have a beefy PC so I'm not sure I need something like a Steam Deck. Both the Odin 2 and Steam Deck seem pretty bulky as well. I WOULD like to be able to play up to PS2 / gamecube generation of consoles.

They still don't let you talk about the PS3.

Anything with android is basically useless for PS2 emulation. Steam deck is good if you can live with its bulk.

This sounds untrue

Not sure I could, I wouldn't mind taking the device on the go. You can't put a Steam Deck in your pocket.

It's a software issue, PS2 emulators on android suck ass currently.

Well, that's a bit of a deal-breaker. Guess I'll consider going with the Steam Deck.

Time to get bigger pockets.

if you have a nice phone or tablet, it will be far more powerful than any retro handheld on the market, and easier to set up.

I would recommend getting a nice bluetooth controller + clip or mount and just play like that to start.

I played gamecube and wii games on my samsung s21, upscaled. Even those go for 100$ used these days, which is ridiculous w/ their specs. And a backbone controllers are also going for 50-60$.

I have the iPad from 2020. I tried to play on it with a controller but it's not really comfortable that way, it's also pretty heavy. I think it also had latency issues and doesn't have an OLED screen. I'd rather just get a dedicated handheld.

I want one of these that runs linux and also has a removeable battery. Kind of hard to find both, but should be getting there soon.

i was thinking of retro handhelds for the performance comparison w/ a phone.,

for high end handhelds I just want to point out - its super fiddly setting up emulation. these devices are designed to shoehorn you into proprietary storefronts. unless someone demos how easy it is to set up emulation, I'd be dubious of them as the right platform for retro gaming.

for choosing between the given handhelds, the decision should rest on (a) which are the most popular, and therefore most likely to get third party support in the longterm (b) which have demonstrated ease of install and maintenance of third party apps. For that I would say the steam deck wins.

I don't think anyone itt can speak to all of the different handhelds from experience, though. just my 2c.

These things all suck because they can't even emulate a PSP at full speed despite being like 20 years newer, just get one of those wide controller grip attachments for your smartphone, which likely already runs modern games on it.
