The Wayland push is really gonna hit non-Linux Unix users hard in the nuts in the near future.

I read both blog posts from top to bottom and agreed with every word. As an enthusiastic contributor to the Fedora ecosystem, I am finally convinced that I backed the wrong horse years ago. Already switched to Devuan on one PC, but really love how flexible and easy RPM packaging is, so will be looking at Mageia, SUSE, and PCLOS for my other PCs. Anything to stave off being forced onto Wayland. Have been toying with some of the BSDs as well, but am nowhere near ready to make that jump.

What is your use case for knowing the answer to that?

They broke amdgpu in the kernel so vblank causes lag only on Xorg with some AMD cards for 8months by now. There is a patch that restores old behavior but who knows when will that merged....so we have to compile the kernel with the patch until it's merged. https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/3709

Completely misses that the point of DRM was to decouple the kernel from X and so Wayland incompatibility with BSDs is almost entirely because their kernels were never designed to work with an X alternative, just like Linux used to be.

Even with extension burden it is much, much easier to write a Wayland compositor from scratch than an X11 server. We also already have a few generic libraries available like wlroots that makes a Wayland compositor no more effort than an X11 WM.

X11 is shit, it's just that Wayland is somehow even shittier

I would love to just migrate to Wayland but the fucking bigfoot won't implement server-side window decoration and you need dbus client to get native cursor theme. It's like they are trying to make simple things difficult.

Basically you are not allowed to go outside *their* vision of what the desktop should be, so if you really insist on doing so they go a mile out of their way to make it as difficult and shitty as possible in order to discourage anyone from trying.

Remember — It may be your computer, but it is *their* OS.
