If I wanted a desktop I would buy one, but if I'm getting a laptop I want the smallest, thinnest, lightest most portable machine. In fact I really only /need/ a fucking ipad with a keyboard but I still own and use a macbook air

This. I bought a 13" thinkpad after only having desktops all my life and I'm loving it.
It enables a lot of usecases where portability matters(like anytime you don't feel like sitting at your desk), and if I need anything heavy duty I can just remote access my desktop.
