Is there anything wrong with running Word 2007 in the current day? I'm running it under Wine on my Linux box but I can't seem to find anyone using something this old in the modern day. Just old forum posts and how-to videos.

Usually there is a niche for these types of things, but I guess word processors are boring enough that people have almost no reason to hang onto the older versions.

I got upset with LibreOffice and Word 2007 was the first alternative that sprung to mind because it was the one that was installed on our computer growing up, so I just chose that.

And it is before Microsoft employing KMS authentication in their software so you don't have to deal with shady cracks that flag as a virus.

Can it write documents? Do you feel comfortable with using it? If you've answered "yes" to both questions then there's nothing wrong with that. Some writers still rely on DOS word processors, after all. I'd be wary of using it to open random documents you've downloaded online but realistically I doubt anything will happen.

If it works, and it does what you want it to do then why would you ever switch? Newer software is almost always done on the cheap with the aim of making as much profit as possible instead of making a good product. You will probably see a decrease in quality if you switch to something newer while having the company that made that product attempt to steal all your data.

I think that Word in general is one of the worst and least useful parts of the office package. Powerpoint is useful because I don't think you can make a slideshow of that quality that quickly without a program like that, excel is a fantastic statistical tool and so much more, but word is not more convenient than markdown, org mode or latex. The wysiwyg doesn't mean anything when moving an image or something completely fucks over the formatting of a paragraph or something else happens that is completely unexpected.

It's not wysiwyg if you want something more than basic paragraph text. You have to learn stupid little sequences to avoid the kinds of mishaps people talk about. A lot of it is clicking into sub-sub menus and adjusting numbers manually, unticking things that are enabled by default, changing a drop down, etc.
But Word is best used for formal reporting in any case. It's for making "good" looking documents with linked citations, heading structures, TOC, etc that will print seamlessly and save to a .pdf that will do the same. If you want simple text and images then there's no point when so many simple alternatives exist without the hassle.

The one where to find a command you had to look through a dozen different toolbars (including two clicks to show each toolbar and another to hide it) and hover over each 16x16 icon to see what it does? Aight. I'd rather scroll through the 2007 UI with the mousewheel and see labels on most of the icons.

Anon, you need to RETVRN. Office 97 runs perfectly fine under Wine.
Moreover I almost had it working with the Office '03 FileFormatConverters meaning it would read docx and pptx, but it needed some DLLs and other patches to work. I will find them someday and prove to the world it is possible to read modern MS office docs on a 28 year old piece of software on a wholly different OS.

It won't be able to run modern docx files properly and the docx files it creates won't open properly on modern MSO releases. MSO 2007 has terrible PDF support too.

If you don't care about docx compatibility, then you should have no problem running LibreOffice (which has better docx compatibility right now than MSO 2007). If you really like the ribbon UI then you could use OnlyOffice.

Basically there's no point running MSO 2007. It's not like WordPerfect or Lotus which had very specific features tailor made for specific usecases like legal documents that aren't available on any new office suite. MSO 2007 doesn't offer anything.

I use Office 2010 on my Windows XP machine because that's the latest version to support XP. If you are on Vista or 7, Office 2007 matches the aesthetic the best.

Why use a newer version of Office? The spelling and grammar AI is better in newer versions, you can search Microsoft's stock images and icons, and there are more fonts. in PowerPoint there is now a content-aware automatic slide designer and Excel has an AI-powered data insights tool. Microsoft Copilot being introduced into Word has the potential to really transform the program.

discoverability is better with drop down menus
menus are like sentences in your head. e.g., I want to insert a picture. Insert -> Picture -> From File... pick picture.
discoverability is shit with ribbons, so shit that they had to add a search bar to salvage it
and on toolbars - toolbars appear on screen as needed, or can be permanently shown if desired. toolbars exist for everything - drawing, clipart, font, data tables, macros, even the bloody web. much more can be on screen, while always having the core font options available. basically all the advantages of the ribbon toolbars but 10x

>discoverability is better with drop down menus
disagreed
it's easier to find things on a ribbon because they're grouped better spatially. a long toolbar or menu is more difficult to seek through due to their one-dimensional nature
>menus are like sentences in your head. e.g., I want to insert a picture. Insert -> Picture -> From File... pick picture.
other than slight wording differences, that's exactly the same when inserting an image with the ribbon interface
>discoverability is shit with ribbons, so shit that they had to add a search bar to salvage it
the search bar is an improvement regardless if it's next to toolbars or ribbons
>and on toolbars - toolbars appear on screen as needed, or can be permanently shown if desired. toolbars exist for everything - drawing, clipart, font, data tables, macros, even the bloody web. much more can be on screen, while always having the core font options available. basically all the advantages of the ribbon toolbars but 10x
whole ribbon tabs group actions better for different kinds of tasks than what you can work out with toolbars
also you can unpin and collapse a ribbon to maximize screen space for your content. with toolbars you need to juggle each one individually - best alternative that some programs might have, is some kind of workspace switcher that will change the setup of all your toolbars in the application, which usually switches much slower than just clicking another tab to reveal other actions

Bought Office 2007 for $9.95 through the Microsoft Home Use Program at a former employer. The license stays valid even after leaving the company. The current program is a 30% discount on subscriptions. Fuck that noise. Going to stick with this until the heat death of the universe.

*when speaking proper English and you specify a singular person of unknown gender, you use "he". This is the way English was written until recently, and it is till how they do it in every other continental European language (think "er" or "il").
singular "they" is a mistake, having a third person plural is actually useful and "they/them" should exclusively mean that

Neither do the pajeets working at microsoft.
The office file format is garbage. Excel in particular is a nightmare and your files can break even when you're using the same machine and the same software version.

So did I, I had a brand new computer in 2008 which had 4 gigs of memory at the time. Almost every time I ran a game using the source engine, it would bluescreen.

I did not get this issue after going back to XP, and after upgrading to 7.

The fact this binary still runs on modern Windows is incredible and testament to why Windows NT is the greatest desktop operating system for general purpose use, even if all the telemetry crap on top is shit. And I'll bet every feature is supported, including printing. Linuxfags and macfags absolutely can't cope with this degree of backwards-compatibility.

Just that it sucks, Office 2010 is far better if you want Ribbon.
Office 2003 if you don't want Ribbon.
Office 97 if you want a 'classic' interface.

Type =rand(5,5) at the start of a line in Microsoft Word. Does your terminal do that by default? Or do you have to dig around for a dozen different things to install to make something similar work?
