I worked for a huge ad agency for 7 years before I went free lance. I don't use Blender, I mostly dealt with vectors but the 3d department used Maya and 3ds, and the video editing department used Avid (and of course use static graphics designers were balls deep into Adobe suite).
One of the main reasons is reliability and technical support. I suppose if you are a hobbyist this doesn't matter but for businesses with actual pipelines this makes a huge difference/

I looked at a dude animating in 3DS Max and that shit looked ancient. Everything required going into some menu, scrolling down, finding shit. Terrible

scrub. Blender's UI is the best part.

The real reason not to use blender is bmesh starts to suffocate on meshes bigger thal like 10 million verts.

wish parenting was easier and done in the outliner with simple dragging, like c4d.

It doesn't matter how you feel about blender, it's used professionally and it's in significant numbers. Some guys using blender even won a movie award last year. The reason Maya and Max are still popular is workflows established in companies. Changing that is expensive. It has nothing to do with quality of software.

did you even use Blender pre open source? Like in the 90s? I'd take 3D Studio MAX 3 or 4 over its contemporary Blender any day.

Blender's UI was absolute dog shit prior to like 2010 or 2015 or something. Anyone who claims otherwise is just a retarded Blender fag who probably never even used other software.

I used both max and blender in early 2000s and blender was much better. The UI hasn't changed as much as zoomers like to think. Blender was and still is built for speed using shortcuts, which anyone that is actually trying to get work done knows is faster and more efficient. I don't really give a shit if you think max is easier for retards to learn and use, because the rest of us need efficient software not software for newbies.

Even as extreme casual doing 3D shit only occasionally, I'm gonna say blender sculpting sucks dick compared to Zbrush and texturing is literally unusable compared to Substance Painter.
Judging from that experience, I'm gonna say the main thing is probably inferior to paid alternatives too, but Its probably only affects people who actually can into 3D.

Technically they didn’t win the academy award. The event is known for being paid trophy and advertising. Flow the Blender movie, never showed in theaters, the location for their movie is super limited. They did not receive the 4 million dollars they spent. The director even called out Blender for their badly water effects and how it also hindered production.

The alternative without controller is what I use and it works great. I press R then an axis hotkey to rotate, or I press R twice and do free rotation.
For movement I press G then an axis hotkey.
If I press the axis hotkey twice it goes from Global to Local.
It's extremely fucking fast to pose a character like this. Especially when you have auto-IK on for shit like the arms.

I feel like everybody shitting on Blender ITT doesn't actually know how to use it

WTF do you mean, "hardware dependency"? Blender runs on a fucking Raspi. Besides, all your arguments look like arguments from someone who has never used any 3D graphics software. I've used Maya, 3dsmax, C4D and Blender and I prefer Blender over all others. True, C4D has caught up significantly and their MoGraph system is quite cool, but in overall versatility, nothing beats Blender.

No stupid, that’s not how 3D animation works. Every game, video, movies and simulation was done under 3D controllers. There’s a job for being a rigging mechanic in 3D. That itself pays money for animation team to animate the character. No one is going to pay someone who refuses to put controllers in Blender.

Epic announced at their presentation back in June they were partnering with Blender Foundation to get MetaHumans (their digital character creator platform) officially compatible with Blender.

10 years ago I don't even think Blender's existence would even be acknowledged if this announcement happened back then, but now they're getting first-class treatment from top studios. Times are definitely changing for Blender.

Every single 3D program in existence has gizmo. Maya is called Axis: https://help.autodesk.com/view/MAYAUL/2023/ENU/?guid=GUID-F627EDA3-C627-43E8-B5F6-A8FC6175FAD6

Adobe calls it Coordinate system: https://helpx.adobe.com/dimension/features/coordinate-system.html

Houdini calls it Match Axis: https://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/nodes/sop/matchaxis.html

It’s not a special feature, the only thing it does is move objects/bones. You’re stupid.

it's very difficult and confusing if you don't know your way around it. blender's gui has never been intuitive. people will excuse it because they're too stupid to pirate something better and too poor to buy real software.

the academy award is well known for being an advertisement. There’s absolutely nothing special about the academy award.

https://www.vox.com/culture/24094589/oscar-winners-nominees-careers-who-benefits-most

> Many of these complicated outcomes boil down to three things that always seem to go hand in hand with the Oscars: sexism, racism, and the toxic combination thereof, misogynoir. Sometimes, though, the Oscars and the subsequent choices of the people who win them are just weird.

My point was that gizmos fucking suck ass, and Blender is great because it doesnt need them.

Now that Autodesk and Maxon have pretty much gone subscription-only and discontinued perpetual licenses for Maya, 3DS Max and Cinema 4D, I have found myself feel more and more alienated from them. To top it off, Maxon acquired ZBrush and then made it subscription-only.

Blender feels like a refreshing oasis from that.

Blender community is so stupid they can’t understand the concept of moving axis is the same functionality as everyone’s else’s.

I keep reading the exact same functionality and Blender noobs thinking it’s different. Yet no one explains and the Blender documents clearly states it’s used to move axis.

Why do you two idiots think you’re trying to fool.

Jack of all trades, master of none. Procedural generation? Use Houdini. Animation? Use Maya. Sculpting? Use Z-brush. I only see it used professionally for rudimentary hard surface modeling. Most of the updates go towards cycles or some other random bs instead of harshly focusing on the most important use cases, modeling and animation. At the pace they are going it will be a decade before Blender catches up to TODAYS alternative programs.

The main downside is that Blender's development is unreliable because it's not a concerted effort. Like when sculpting was going to be overhauled but the guy walked away and left the work half-finished because the main blender guys wouldn't let him move sculpting into a separate instance.

wait hold up
people actually use gizmos? what the fuck lmao!
like a month ago i briefly tried out maya at an intro course at some uni and bah gawd that shit felt alien and almost archaic to use. by default i think maya is more efficient but i missed blender stuff like the flexible snapping operation as maya's method was like going backwards in time to the wings3d days, or worse as it reminded me of "complicated" CAD software.

Dishonest statement: you said I "talked about gizmos" without specifying I was shitting on them for being archaic.
>>No it’s not Gizmo
Dishonest statement: you're the one who conflated the topic into something it's not
>>Blender does not document anything else
Dishonesty statement: you ignored the mentioned shortcuts here >>105785954
Once again:
G for movement, R for rotation. X for the X axis, Y for the Y axis, Z for the Z axis. Double-tap an axis to switch between global and local. Double-tap R to rotate freely.
>>No such thing exists
Those shortcuts are in all versions of Blender. They work in edit mode, object mode, and for moving controllers of rigs in animation.
They are in ALL versions of Blender.

You are dishonest.
