>Why would i need my own server?
when you don't want to rely on other peoples'/companies' hosting services

>and what can i do with this server?
host a personal website or blog
host a file server (like "cloud storage" but you own the hardware your data is stored on)

>Host mail?
impractical, anything you send will get filtered by everyone elses' anti-spam filters

>A minecrap server?
or any other game that has a dedicated server mode

To access your personal stuff when you're outside the house.

File sharing
Media center
Contacts
Calendar

Or host stuff for others, like a game server.
Or seed torrents.

i had one for 3 years and eventually switched to a fortinet fortigate 60f. It can do crazy shit like act as a credential server and redirect inbound traffic to different internal resources based on the login credentials that were used

American ISPs don't give a fuck how much you download and don't even send piracy emails anymore because they know you'll just switch to a competitor. I've been downloading & uploading TBs of illegal shit every month for 20 years at this point, never once got a bad email or letter from the ISP.

All my neighbors have the same ISP supplied Huawei modem/router combo I have. I know what the default passwords are like and it's reasonably secure against brute forcing. I tried cracking some of their WPA handshakes using a multi GPU setup I have access to just hoping to get lucky and I didn't even after waiting for days. When I lived in the US Spectrum was the only serious ISP there. Their modem/router combos default passwords could be easily broken with a dictionary attack. I sent the handshakes to friends that had GPUs and they broke them with hashcat in no more than 5 minutes. I then had some complicated setup using a raspberry pi to connect one of my neighbor's wifi to my home router to use it as my own home connection.

I've been doing it for years and it's easier than ever to be lazy about it. I know how to write my own nginx config but these days I just look for one tailored to the application I'm proxying then ask a LLM to rewrite it based on my needs. SSL is dead simple because of certbot. Just don't make retarded choices that expose things in an insecure way.

reminder that there's no "network resources" it's just them turning on and off your ability to access the net, there's no resource being drained or service being provided apart from issuing you an IP. If you're smart you can just connect directly to the line without using an ISP.

That's not entirely true. Not that I agree with ISPs trying to shake down heavy users. Like for instance my ISP uses GPON. This means there is 1 single gbit shared between all users connected to the same box on the same pole as me. My speed is 800mbit. I can basically cuck everyone else by downloading at max speeds 24/7. My ISP isn't going to stop me from doing this though. I also don't actually need to do that. I highly suspect most of my neighbors don't have a higher speed plan like I have. Beyond that there's the providers they source bandwidth from. They only get so much from them. It's always increasing as they grow but they're also taking on more customers further taxing those resources.

I've got an Intel NUC 12 i7, which I've been thinking about turning into a virtualisation node. Are there any cool home services I can run?

Right now all I have is my consumer router, plus two Raspberry Pis (one sharing an external HDD, the other on Pihole duty).

At least in the US, the RIAA & MPAA used to go after people. They got embarrassed so many times, including going after an elderly woman who has never had a computer or the internet in her life, that they just stopped doing it. Sometimes public humiliation of epic proportions is the best way to get things changed.
