Whether you have to pay for a font depends on the specific font and its licensing terms. Here are some common scenarios:

1. **Free Fonts**: Many fonts are available for free, often under licenses that allow personal and sometimes commercial use. Websites like Google Fonts and Font Squirrel offer a variety of free fonts.

2. **Commercial Fonts**: Some fonts require a purchase or a licensing fee, especially those created by professional type foundries. These fonts often come with specific usage rights, so it's important to read the license agreement.

3. **Open Source Fonts**: Some fonts are released under open-source licenses, allowing you to use, modify, and distribute them freely, as long as you comply with the terms of the license.

4. **Subscription Services**: Some platforms offer fonts through subscription services, where you pay a monthly or annual fee to access a library of fonts.

Always check the licensing information for any font you intend to use to ensure compliance with its terms.

You can pirate fonts, I can't remember where off the top of my head but as long as you're not using it for anything public-facing there shouldn't be any risk of getting sued.
Paying for fonts is only necessary if you need the license for copyright reasons.

No, not typically. The only reason you pay for an operating system is because some grifter named Bill Gates decided to charge you for one. Linux is free.

Well actually, most operating systems used to be very much paid. GNU was the wierd one. Not that I don't love it.

it depends where the font is from!!!
in Germany for example, fonts CAN be copyrighted, so be careful if its from a German foundry
otherwise, in most countries typefaces themselves cannot be copyrighted, only the font file can (as a "written work", and even that is debatable). so unless you're literally giving people the exact same font file, there's so many ways to get out of jail free here
IMO though, you should seek to support smaller font foundries. making a font is actually a lot of hard work, making the shapes of the letters is the easy part, hinting it so that it looks good at any size is an insane hellzone. But don't support the huge foundries that want to DRM you up the ass (to try and stop you from tracing or reflowing the font and getting it for free)
