"Essentially force" rather than brute force because people, in an iterated prisoner's dilemma type of situation, need digits or their lives are hell. So it has really nothing to do with technological progress except that technological progress has been a useful side effect of whatever innovation is necessary in the pursuit of these digits. Almost everywhere, greed for digits has outcompeted everything else, so there are few left that even understand these digits don't really even exist. Yet simultaneously they very much do exist, as they animate the direction of the life force of much of Earth's semi sentient inhabitants.
