it'd bother me whenever I viewed an image or video fullscreen and part of it was just hidden by the camera cutout.
Luckily there is a developer option to just always display a black status bar at the top that hides the cutout. I don't understand why this isn't the default.

Having a layer of display will always degrade the quality of selfie.
Also if the pixels above the sensor are lit, the front facing camera is not available.
Not to mention the face unlock and recognition that would require the pixels to be off all most of times.
