It is already often better than the compatibility layer Microsoft uses to pass-off NT as "Windows". If it wasn't for Microsoft allowing kernel-level malware in NT you probably couldn't even consistently spot the difference in a blind test other than NT being slower.

"Wine Is Not an Emulator" it is a compatibility layer for UNIX-like operating systems that allows them to run win32 software compiled for AMD64 and legacy x86 hardware, provided the hardware is compatible.
Directly comparable to Microsoft's win32 compatibility layer they maintain for their VMS-like OS.

Although with the recent massive layoffs, and its lack of contribution to their bottom line, it isn't clear if Microsoft will be maintaining their compatibility solution anymore.

It was basically good enough in 2020. Now it's so good I don't even think about it.

for all usecases of consequence ms office is already usable through edge and office 365

adobe applications are shitware, it's not like they're actually functional on windows either, just slightly more so
the artfags need to drop their abusive relationship first in order for there to really be enough momentum for things to change
people were complaining about how shitty blender was for years before it started to see real UX improvements
but they were still using it

It's just Valve's dev branch that fixes newer games and breaks older ones. The builds in Arch and Fedora are good for most purposes.

no
proton is more than just wine
it's wine + prebundled dependencies + configs + game specific fixes + tools, and also includes a namespaces based sandbox/container runtime meant to isolate the execution environment to make sure everything behaves consistently between different computers and distros

This shit is just sad, you don't often see a basic misunderstanding of everything as bad as this.

I don't know what you mean but in gaming it's already fixed. In applications in general valve is not interested.

What wine people are doing is implementing all windows core libraries. That's not an easy feat, especially since some specifications are not that well documented and need careful testing. It will take time to be perfect, but it's getting there.

You're right, but just to clarify those things aren't actually needed for wine to work in many gaming. I use standard wine with dxvk for non-steam games and most of the time it works fine with no extra steps. I do need to figure out why a few games don't work, but it's very rare that I need to fix them. Usually involves locale, wine options, dxvk options, missing fonts, or wine tricks tickery. As you mentioned, that's proton big feature, games are pre-configured to run properly.
