Some years ago I thought about making a browser extension that allowed people to write anonymous comments on any web page that other people who installed the extension could read and comment on, too.
Do you think this could be a good idea or is it just retarded?

Pic unrelated.

Pretty easy to make a new one, just have a cheapo vps as db to store and encrypt the text (and only text) and dont use official extension stores and thats it, nothing can stop you. Also rangeban every country except europe and about 12 american states.

maybe you can get around the issue via p2p, then you have no admin and therefore no one is responsible, but glowniggers will run a campaign that creates a negative image for it so not many people will use it

You could federalize it so that you only see comments from clusters you've subscribed to.
This avoids issues like oversaturation, glowniggers and cultural drift.
We could also use this tech to clean up search engines by local filtering via a merkle tree built from flag lists you've subscribed to, we could filter out most of the dead internet and not give it our time and attention.
Effectively the infrastructure is still a message board, but spatially it does not have its own page, it's laid over other pages. To avoid beaming your entire browsing history to the nodes, periodically pull directory data from them. Then pull per-site data intentionally bucketed with dozens of other sites, so that the node does not know for sure which one you actually are reading right now.

They did that for a while, then the browser.
But it just wasn't realistic to keep it going the adoption rate was just too low when both extension stores banned them.
Few people even heard about the browser after the attack campaign from the media it seemed like the browser got suppressed.

Why not extend the idea and make it more of a website rating service, where you can rate and comment. Imagine that you found an interesting website/page or anything on the web, then you can share its URL, like a link aggregators but instead of it being a discussion, it's your rating and opinion, and others can do the same thing, and instead of the posts being related by the OP, they're related by the rated URL, so you can view all the ratings and comments by selecting a URL.

The user wanting to rate should be obligated to signup in a pseudo-anonymous way, to prevent spam and to make an archive of user submissions. There should be no upvooting-like system, so users are not influenced by other's opinions, but it should be a way to report spam and TOS violation (which should be prevented by some captcha/POW).

And you can add an extension to view comments/ratings of the current website.

I didn't think of it like this. sounds like an interesting twist to make the extension useful while preventing retards from abusing it too much because it would kind of take too much effort to spam their shitty "opinions".
I had thought the extension as something useful. like, want to visit a restaurant? go check their website, facebook page or whatever, and check the comments (opinions, interesting trivia, complaints, whatever) other people left within the extension or the main page linked to the URL by the extension.

problem with the idea is that unless you're ok with bots spamming NIGGER and affiliate links for chinese spam sites a trillion times on every page, preventing any possible discussions, you need moderation. and the second you implement algorithmic/AI/manual moderation, you have become what you hated to begin with (free speech commenting system)

not sure what the solution is - maybe a social credit system like china. sure, you can spam racial slurs on any page, but it will affect your ability to buy milk/eggs tomorrow. suddenly people will behave.
