How can I mask the mining as something else?

if you pay for it - you can do whatever
if you intend to steal compute resources - they are highly-likely using NGFW filtering + SIEM/SOAR configured to detect suspicious activity, so you will end-up in jail

did you pay for those hours yourself, or did your organization pay for it and allocated quota to you with specific purpose?
first case - well, you paid for it, so al long as service provider in general does not prohibit mining, then you should be fine
second case - if your organization make a quota allocation to your account for you to do some specific work with it, then you will still end-up in jail
taking into consideration you initial question on "masking" it as some other legitimate use - your highly-likely in the second case

do a cost benefit analysis for the taxpayers: compute resources wasted on some research that doesn't go anywhere vs injecting capital into the economy via bitcoin

a crime is a crime, even when done for greater cause in mind
also, if you will try to mask it as some legitimate workload - that would probably be considered as aggravating circumstances, and make you're case even worse

You can't mine bitcoin anymore, even with ASICs it's not worth the power needed.

Instead of running an AI service and profiting from it, you choose to do shit that hasn't been worthwhile for years. Retards gonna retard.

If you had a real currency, you wouldn't need crypto.
