Chinese guy seems to claim to have solved the mosquito laser beam problem
lidar system for mosquitos doesnโt seem possible because of how small these insects are combined with the noise of the environment. Iโve seen a few papers about how you could use the Doppler effect to see the frequency of their wings but nothing too convincing
Also seems like itโs one of those problems that seems easy to solve but is actually extremely hard
Any laser that could kill a mosquito would be a danger to the eyes too right?
Here is the link

Yeah I am definitely putting a computerized high-powered auto-targeting Chinese laser in my vicinity to kill a few mosquitos
>>105816967Fuck mosquitos tho
>>105816930 (OP)>Any laser that could kill a mosquito would be a danger to the eyes too right? It would be cool to wear as a hat. I would buy it.
>>105816930 (OP)Lidar can judge distance and depth pretty well, it's why it's used for things like 3d scanners and self-driving car sensors to detect incoming objects. It would just have to be a high enough resolution to detect mosquitos. Assuming that you have a space that's mostly open air, like pointing it at an open window or something, it should be able to detect mosquitos and other bugs.
>>105816930 (OP)bet they can make a bigger one for jeets
>>105816930 (OP)>Crowdfunding It's a scam. They'd go for more sophisticated investors if they had a working product.
>>105817482What grade lidar would you need to do it you think? Any commercial options?
i will now buy your housefire starting device
>wake up

>>105817528Idk, maybe the DJI L2 could probably do it. But it starts at like $20k. Given, it's one of the cheaper enterprise-grade LiDARs
>>105816967don't worry, it'll be b& right after someone takes one to a protest
>>105817546Yeah I think that using water with rubbing alcohol or soap would be better with a compressor shooting device not sure how hard it would be to deliver a shot over several meters
I've always wanted some miniature phased array antenna radar with surface to air airburst salt missiles for mosquitoes. This is cool but I don't trust it to not blind you, also I don't have a mosquito problem
>>105819157I donโt have a mosquito problem either but thinking about the problem really fascinates me. Mosquitos are such tiny animals and kill so many. And if fixed it would be huge and it doesnโt seem too crazy of a problem to work on
can we use lasers to kill other bugs? cockroaches? spiders?
lots of big mos shills in this thread
>>105816930 (OP)>>105816953Cool, but could this end up burning down my house?

Damn, new Chinese blinding machine just dropped
I mean, aren't there probably sprays that are lethal to mosquitos but not humans?
>>105816930 (OP)>Chinese guy inventor>LIDAR heat-seeking lazer>spyware>no prior media attention>mid-range cost, similar to a Switch 2So what is the actual problem here
We have already figured out that electric mesh + uv light = zap. This isn't necessary.
>>105816930 (OP)I fucking hate pests. The worst part of looking for a new apartment is reading the reviews and finding one from five years ago that mentions a cockroach. Every fucking apartment has that fucking review. My solution has just been to rent a house and pay for monthly spraying which has been good but it would be great if there were some actual 100% effective methods for keeping them away.
>>105820882>works>doesn't break>chinesePick two.
>>105816967You would if it were made by the United States of Mossad though :)
>>105816930 (OP)poor little mosquitos
Or just install net mesh in all your windows, I spent $80 and made size perfect nets for all the windows in my house. Zero mosquitoes, flies and bugs for a year now
>>105816930 (OP)You don't need more than pic rel to deal with a mosquito problem. I used to work at pharmaceutical, this is all I'd use against them and it does the trick. You can even torture the fuckers with it by a spraying a bit first, and then spraying a bit more and watch them die.

>>105816967>>105817410Whatever happened to that plan to genocide certain biting species of mosquitoes by introducing sterile ones into the native population to decimate their fertility rates?

https://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/sterile-insect-technique-used-to-suppress-mosquito-disease-vectors-in-florida
>The SIT pilot project, which was initiated n the coastal city of Fort Myers, has already been tested out on Captiva Island in Florida, around 30 miles away, during a successful pilot project between 2020 and 2022. Male mosquitoes were mass-reared and sterilized before being released to mate with wild females. At the peak of releases, approximately 400 000 sterile males were released per week in Captiva Island. The releases led to a significant reduction of the population in the first year, 2020, and complete suppression in 2021 and 2022. Scientists were able to compare ecological indexes between Sanibel Island (the control area) and Captiva Island, where the sterile mosquitoes were released. Rachel Morreale, Manager of the Applied Science and Technologies Department at LCMCD, stated โit was remarkable to see the impacts that our sterile male releases had on the population of Ae. aegypti on Captiva.โ
I do remember something from an university 10 years ago that was experimenting with this, but this device seems a bit small
There's plenty of commercial engraving lasers that can scan a large area fast but they usually have fixed focus distance
I think I remember a talk from 10+ years ago from a guy working at Microsoft Research where they "solved" this problem. They used cameras and were using some DSP approach that looked for mosquito wing frequencies or something. The problems that made it impractical then are still problems now, namely that any laser capable of shooting a mosquito out of the air is capable of instantly blinding you, and that an auto-targetting laser system is much more expensive than mosquito repellant, nets, or insecticide
>>105816930 (OP)>>Any laser that could kill a mosquito would be a danger to the eyes too right?Probably, yeah. Reflections and such would be dangerous too, there's no way I'd want this kind of thing operating in my house.
Also this product is like a solution in search of a problem. Just install mosquito nets on your windows, who in their right mind allows mosquitos to get into their home only to buy a $500 laser gadget with built-in blindness Russian roulette as a solution?
>>105816930 (OP)It's a solved problem and it doesn't require lasers. Just release male mosquitoes that are infertile, and since female mosquitoes can only mate once in their lifetime, this drastically cuts down on mosquito reproduction.
>>105821588I figure it didnโt get the funding the researchers wanted so they moved on. Thereโs so much good research in the funding graveyard.
>>105821588>we reduced their population by 2% for one breeding seasonwhoa
would be more effective if they introduced degenerate genetic traits into the mosquitos that made their entire species less fit, sort of like tricking whites into racemixing
>>105817510Is there a lidar for smell?
>>105821644Why are retards so bad at exponential math?
>>105821670There's nothing exponential going on. The amount of mosquitos you're producing in a lab is 0.01% the number of wild mosquitos so the effect is a statistical blip in the first place. Even if you produced 50%, it wouldn't matter because mosquitos are still going to reach the population cap that the environment can support, male fertility is not the limiting factor.
>>105821588>>105821643It's not dead but it doesn't seem like it would be useful in a wide area like a forest but only as a border to prevent diffusion of unwanted species

The laser will definitely blind you. A rubbing alcohol and water shooter with a compressor seems more reasonable as itโs easy to clean with minimal residu
>>105820326can it be used to blind small animals? Roughly the size of a human? Would it be painful?

I'm terrified of lasers. It's just a matter of time until someone develops and builds a weaponized laser system that can blind hundreds of people in a crowd in an instant.

>>105816930 (OP)>Any laser that could kill a mosquito would be a danger to the eyes too right? At 1400-1550 nm wavelength it would probably be kinda/sorta safe, but you'd never get it certified.
>>105825537>LASER damage to eyes happens insanely quick, it's a joke.Because it tends to hit a surface, either the cornea or the retina depending on the wavelength. If you pick the wavelength just right it is absorbed in the volume of the eye.
>>105821247That it's probably fake. The price of the LIDAR and laser components alone should be more than the total cost for this to really be effective.
>>105821730>2% each generation>exponentialanon that's not how exponential works you big fucking retard, you're arguing against yourself
>>1058300512D lidar modules are cheap, because they are used in robovacuums. AFAICS this works along a plane, so 2D is all you need. The galvo can just be a single mirror on a motor too. So then you just need a laser diode. He uses blue, which is not ideal for safety but couple watt laser diodes are cheap.
If you want to make it work in 3D it's harder, but 2D simplifies things.
>>105831311So it will only work in the mosquitos are on a flat plane that the device can sit parallel to? That's quite limiting and not what I think people are imagining when they hear about this.
