Chinese guy seems to claim to have solved the mosquito laser beam problem

lidar system for mosquitos doesnโ€™t seem possible because of how small these insects are combined with the noise of the environment. Iโ€™ve seen a few papers about how you could use the Doppler effect to see the frequency of their wings but nothing too convincing

Also seems like itโ€™s one of those problems that seems easy to solve but is actually extremely hard

Any laser that could kill a mosquito would be a danger to the eyes too right?

Lidar can judge distance and depth pretty well, it's why it's used for things like 3d scanners and self-driving car sensors to detect incoming objects. It would just have to be a high enough resolution to detect mosquitos. Assuming that you have a space that's mostly open air, like pointing it at an open window or something, it should be able to detect mosquitos and other bugs.

I fucking hate pests. The worst part of looking for a new apartment is reading the reviews and finding one from five years ago that mentions a cockroach. Every fucking apartment has that fucking review. My solution has just been to rent a house and pay for monthly spraying which has been good but it would be great if there were some actual 100% effective methods for keeping them away.

You don't need more than pic rel to deal with a mosquito problem. I used to work at pharmaceutical, this is all I'd use against them and it does the trick. You can even torture the fuckers with it by a spraying a bit first, and then spraying a bit more and watch them die.

Whatever happened to that plan to genocide certain biting species of mosquitoes by introducing sterile ones into the native population to decimate their fertility rates?
https://www.cdc.gov/mosquitoes/mosquito-control/irradiated-mosquitoes.html
https://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/sterile-insect-technique-used-to-suppress-mosquito-disease-vectors-in-florida
>The SIT pilot project, which was initiated n the coastal city of Fort Myers, has already been tested out on Captiva Island in Florida, around 30 miles away, during a successful pilot project between 2020 and 2022. Male mosquitoes were mass-reared and sterilized before being released to mate with wild females. At the peak of releases, approximately 400 000 sterile males were released per week in Captiva Island. The releases led to a significant reduction of the population in the first year, 2020, and complete suppression in 2021 and 2022. Scientists were able to compare ecological indexes between Sanibel Island (the control area) and Captiva Island, where the sterile mosquitoes were released. Rachel Morreale, Manager of the Applied Science and Technologies Department at LCMCD, stated โ€œit was remarkable to see the impacts that our sterile male releases had on the population of Ae. aegypti on Captiva.โ€

There's plenty of commercial engraving lasers that can scan a large area fast but they usually have fixed focus distance

I think I remember a talk from 10+ years ago from a guy working at Microsoft Research where they "solved" this problem. They used cameras and were using some DSP approach that looked for mosquito wing frequencies or something. The problems that made it impractical then are still problems now, namely that any laser capable of shooting a mosquito out of the air is capable of instantly blinding you, and that an auto-targetting laser system is much more expensive than mosquito repellant, nets, or insecticide

Probably, yeah. Reflections and such would be dangerous too, there's no way I'd want this kind of thing operating in my house.

Also this product is like a solution in search of a problem. Just install mosquito nets on your windows, who in their right mind allows mosquitos to get into their home only to buy a $500 laser gadget with built-in blindness Russian roulette as a solution?

It's a solved problem and it doesn't require lasers. Just release male mosquitoes that are infertile, and since female mosquitoes can only mate once in their lifetime, this drastically cuts down on mosquito reproduction.

There's nothing exponential going on. The amount of mosquitos you're producing in a lab is 0.01% the number of wild mosquitos so the effect is a statistical blip in the first place. Even if you produced 50%, it wouldn't matter because mosquitos are still going to reach the population cap that the environment can support, male fertility is not the limiting factor.

>lidar system for mosquitos doesnโ€™t seem possible because of how small these insects are combined with the noise of the environment.
>Also seems like itโ€™s one of those problems that seems easy to solve but is actually extremely hard

What couldn't you just use acoustic imaging for this? You can already detect tiny leaks against background noise with them, surely a mosquito would be easy.

Why does it have to be a laser? Why not just make automated turret that fires salt?

>salt is cheap and plentiful everywhere
>no worries about house fires or damage to the eyes
>wont hurt people or damage property in the cases where it misses
>would be more cost efficient since its not wasting energy on a laser or trying to manage that laser

>Any laser that could kill a mosquito would be a danger to the eyes too right?
At 1400-1550 nm wavelength it would probably be kinda/sorta safe, but you'd never get it certified.

>LASER damage to eyes happens insanely quick, it's a joke.
Because it tends to hit a surface, either the cornea or the retina depending on the wavelength. If you pick the wavelength just right it is absorbed in the volume of the eye.

That it's probably fake. The price of the LIDAR and laser components alone should be more than the total cost for this to really be effective.

2D lidar modules are cheap, because they are used in robovacuums. AFAICS this works along a plane, so 2D is all you need. The galvo can just be a single mirror on a motor too. So then you just need a laser diode. He uses blue, which is not ideal for safety but couple watt laser diodes are cheap.

If you want to make it work in 3D it's harder, but 2D simplifies things.

So it will only work in the mosquitos are on a flat plane that the device can sit parallel to? That's quite limiting and not what I think people are imagining when they hear about this.

the mosquitos already mutated around the gene-drive that should've made all offspring male. The mosquitos with the gene-edit probably had other issues that made them less fit to reproduce and spread their male-only genes.
