what is /g/ drive of choice? I'm looking to buy a new 4tb+ drive but it's been like 10 years since since the last time I bought some storage so what's the best choice in [current year]? Last time I checked Seagate drives were fucking dog ass shit, are the newer revisions any good? or should I go WD like a good goy?

Get enterprise recertified drives with a 3yr warranty. Minimum 8tb to avoid CMR and try to target <$14/tb. At that level brand doesn't matter and a bad drive will fail before the warranty is up.
Or shuck enclosed drives when they go on sale at best buy. Those haven't been under $14/tb in while though.

My WD developed a couple thousands bad sectors after a few months

Seagate now a days is your best option by far, WD is ass unless you buy some enterprise shit

if you need under 10TB just buy and SSD
whatever you do don't buy barracudas or WD Blues

Longterm? HDD
Seagate 14,16,20tb expensive but finally good , not like old ones
WD blue 2tb, 4tb though there is a difference in older ones and newer and the older ones are actually better.

Operating system, games? SSD
this is a bit mroe complex, any m2 is great but me personally i use crucials mx, never failed me especially 500gb and 1tb ones

Everything else i tested is chinaslop and failed me multiple times hoever there are sitll some that work, it's pur luck i guess.

8TB SSDs are too expensive though.
1 4TB ssd costs 100€ more than an 8TB hdd.
Also are they durable long term? I know they at least have some way to mitigate damage.
I might just get 2x4TB and put them into my PC as a start instead of a NAS though.

Are SSDs better if it's just a one-and-done write for the most part?
Like I'd buy 2x 4TB ssds and have one of them be the backup, both only store stuff like anime/manga/images.
Shouldn't they last quite a bit if the SSD downside is the limited write endurance?

I just like the idea that I could fit them in my PC instead of getting a dedicated NAS when I'm storing stuff I have no intention of exposing to the internet. (legal)
I'm also not a fan of noise in general, so that is a big enough perk that I might be willing to pay double~.
Still unsure if I want them to be M2/nvme as I only have 1 free m2 slot left on my mobo + the samsung evo normal ssd-s feel like "real" ssds while m2s look like ram sticks.
Maybe I'll get 1 m2 and 1 normal.

your 20TB mechanical hdd with exotic platter stacking magic voodoo will fail before that, and you'll replace the SSD before it fails anyway as capacity will go up and price goes down
HDDs are on their death knell, they will go the way of the floppy disk by the end of this decade

I could get 2x 4TB to start with and expand later at least multi-slot NAS are cheaper for SSDs as far as I can tell.

I'd buy WD or Toshiba, definitely CMR. I never had a problem with those.
The only drive I actually had a problem with was the notorious 3TB Seagate drive.

Thanks to Helium fill picrel is very VERY silent as long as it doesn't move its RW-head but the characteristic click noise isn't too annoying and you can make it much less audible just by noise insulating you case panels and the HDD frame.

One of those companies has a track record of lying to its customers.
The other one has had some badly designed drives 15 years ago but their current enterprise models are good.
I think the choice is obvious

Some new enterprise drives are now also called Barracudas. But really any drive with helium in it is based on their enterprise platform and ok.

They're all the same. I've had both Seagate & WD drives, neither have failed within 8 years of active use. WD drives are more expensive, but much quieter. Seagate drives are loud as all hell, but cheaper, especially if you shuck.
