Update Radeon Adrenalin driver to 25.6.3 (performance improvement)
RTX 50 Super rumors: 5070 Ti Super 24GB, 5080 Super 24GB, 5070 Super 18GB

>Omissions
RTX 5070 Ti: buy if you need CUDA, if you value DLSS/Reflex that highly, and if the 5060 Ti 16GB or 5070 isn't performant enough.
RTX 5070: buy if it's reasonably priced & if you plan to work around potential VRAM bottlenecks.
RX 9070 non-XT: current 9070 prices in the US are too close to the 9070XT's.

>Product Notice
Gigabyte RTX 50 & RX 9000 video cards: thermal gel has QC issues.
Gigabyte claims only early production batches were affected.
https://www.igorslab.de/en/update-on-thermal-putty-on-gigabyte-graphics-cards-after-further-storage-oil-separation-to-an-alarming-extent-and-silence-as-a-strategy/

Avoid updating Gigabyte motherboard's RGB controller firmware, it can disable the board features such as Q-Flash Plus.

AOC Q27G40XMN: nice budget 1440p miniLED monitor if you win the QC lottery.
Bad one causes DisplayHDR setting to look overbrightened and desaturated when applying the best local dimming option.

Hello Friends,

Please help me, I wanted to buy a pre-assembled linux PC from Tuxedo, but they said they don't offer one without wifi/bluetooth module and removing it voids warranty.

I want a pc without wifi/bluetooth because those are security issues.

So in the end, I concluded I will need to build my own pc. I am totally new to this, so please give me some pointers.

budget: under 2000 euros
use case: no gaming, web browsing, accounting work, business analyst work etc

I want it to work well with linux

The Nvidia GPUs are running in headless docker containers. Far different from your home computer Linux installation.

To put in perspective, the Nvidia GPUs are for servers without a display because they are designed to crunch numbers. AMD GPUS work with a display because they're designed to do things besides datacenter.

You don't need a discrete GPU (video card) for that use case.
Give us a link to that prebuilt Linux PC to help us know the level of performance you were planning to get.

This is good enough for accounting/MS Office workloads.
https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/3kpq2x

The memory kit is far from ideal for gaming, but it's good enough for office work (plus stable).

It wasn't universally good till DLSS 4. There was compromise before, worse image quality for better performance. Now it's indistinguishable to native for the most part. I get 4K image quality, high/locked target framerate and low heat and noise because I'm not stressing my card with native 4k resolution. It's just amazing tech.

honestly, this could be pretty much perfect already. the prebuilt one I was looking at had tons of choices to make so I was never really sure how powerful to go

Currently I am working on a laptop thinkpad x1
>intel(r) core(tm) i7-10510U cpu @1.80ghz
>16gb ram
>1TB ssd
>intel(r) uhd graphics

and this laptop covers pretty much my requirements in real life, but it heats up like a frying pan.

I figured I would want a fixed computer with my first linux OS, this laptop has windows 10

and i would just keep the laptop, phase it out but keep it still, but start working more and more on the linux pc

Acer X32Q FS releases in Aus in ~3 weeks.
AOC U32G4ZMN releases Q4 in Aus.

Both 31.5" 1152 zone miniLED.
Acer is IPS with 150hz
AOC is FastVA with 240hz

AOC has a stupid non-joystick menu, but it's a nice display, very low smearing for VA.

Acer are cheap, but they're on my blacklist after they refused to recognise a fault i had with a 1440p monitor years ago, i even sent them video footage of the screen cutouts i recorded on my phone for the second warranty claim, backed up by the pc store i bought it from who forwarded the footage on my behalf, they refused to honor the warranty (australia), buy at your own peril, if there's a problem with it you will likely be jumping through endless hoops. If your nations consumer laws are good, you'll eventually be okay, but don't risk it imo.

AOC are the best for budget monitors in terms of reliability and performance in my exp.

Other hardware reviewers won't replicate FuckFace Steve Unboxed's video card benchmarks because they don't rig the test conditions.
HWUB Steve unrealistically limits the GPU boost clock frequencies to match official specs, which causes a stock 5070 Ti to miss at least 300MHz of GPU core boost frequency.

Any meaningful differences between these two RAMs for my gaming laptop? It's a Legion 5 Ryzen 7 5800H RTX 3070
I don't know much about this stuff, I know the Integral is CL20 and the Kingston is CL22 but again, don't know what that actually means

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Integral-2x16GB-3200MT-Notebook-MacBook/dp/B0BB7ZD652
https://www.argos.co.uk/product/4019918?clickSR=slp:term:sodimm%20ddr4:1:126:1

Any help very welcome. Thank you!

The Kingston memory has CL20, Integral is CL22. Lower is better, but it's not going to show any meaningful difference.
It's okay to buy used memory kits, especially if it's backed by Amazon for easy returns.
I'd buy the used Integral kit for £35.16 compared to paying nearly 3x for the Kingston.

Memory chips are extremely durable, that's why most of the decent kit manufacturers offer a limited lifetime warranty.
Laptop memory modules should be even safer because very few people bother to OC them.

Buy used kits from a retailer with a good return policy in case you end up with a dud.

usually boot issues are something wrong with your ram. is EXPO mode on? turn it off, most ram isnt compatible with it and its not well-explained or advertised when you're shopping for DDR5.

Most modern mobos auto-scan and set the ram to the advertised speeds for you, so you shouldnt need to make much changes. XMP-enabled is fine.

Reseat the ram first, carefully (set the pc on its back to do it), then try rebooting and check that.

so long as your pc can fit it at the top, yes, and the frame strength of the case wont be overly bent by it. I love my Antec Flux pro, but my arctic freezer 3 360 weighs down the top of it a little, which causes the side panels at the top to stick out 1mm each, they still hold position and hold the air-seal in just fine but its noticeable.

And its less then half the performance of a 4060 but you save 80w using a 8700g vs a 12100f and a 4060.

You choice is basically APU that has the performance of a next steam deck on steroids
Or a 12100f and 4060 that uses 2.5 x the power for 2x the performance of the APU

to be fair, its very minor, and the case remains fully functional, i also set the radiator itself closer to the front of the tower when i assembled it, if i put in the effort, i could unscrew and re-attach it closer to the rear of the case and it might not have the bend at all, but im too lazy.

The Antec is a great case but the front mesh needs an additional mesh-cover to prevent excess dust buildup. The fractal meshify 3 XL is likely a better case though.

Here in Germany, the average electricity price for households is around 40 cents per kilowatt-hour. There is a lot of pressure on the subject of energy efficiency, which is why for instance there is major tax levied on automobile engines with displacements higher than 2.2 liters.

micro atx is a bit questionable unless you plan on frequently traveling with it or something because it's just gonna fuck your air flow
other than that it's a good build assuming your gpu upgrade somewhat matches the cpu in terms of performance. what are you thinking of getting?

as for putting it together, it's really just lego for adults. there's a ton of build videos so you can usually find something pretty closely matching your gear if you want to be extra sure to not fuck it up. just search for [case] pc build and see which one's the closest to your parts

But it's made of mesh, how does it have bad airflow? Well if two people say it's shit I'll switch it out. Maybe I'll check Facebook marketplace.

compact builds are more annoying to put together, airflow will never be as good, you have to chose compact fans, it limits you gpu choice, etc
check actual dimensions of the space you have, maybe you can put a regular tower there

The problem is that there's really no clearance on the top. Which isn't an issue right now becasue my pc doesn't have any top fans and the buttons are on the front. But I'm thinking that a more powerful pc will want top clearance and 99% of the cases I see have buttons on the top, which I won't be able to reach.

less space for the air to move around in and you'd make that even worse by putting that small space in another small space. the idea is to intake cool air from the environment outside of the pc but if the pc is in a small space, it will intake the hot air you're trying to get rid of

imo, the cpu is kinda overkill for that gpu unless you're thinking of upgrading again in the near future (especially considering you're on a budget)

it looks completely solid in the pictures so i actually thought the leds were completely cosmetic at first and not fans
anyway, if it's going in that little cubby, i'd still advice against it for the same reason as the micro (except the problem is reversed because you have good air flow inside the case but it has even less outside space to intake cool air from)

Unless you are trying to use it for AI generation 16 GB is enough for modern games. Sometimes looks like its butting up against the limit but it will still work. But sure, if you need more than 16 you don't really have a choice, because otherwise you would have already gotten a 5090.

when it comes to power efficiency, newer is almost always better.

It seems that with 40 and 50 series, nvidia gave up trying to optimize power states for the millions of different monitor configurations out there, so if you have 3 or more monitors, the memory clock just stays maxed which causes the power draw to remain above the idle threshold. dsc also just further complicates things because monitors using dsc technically count as two monitors. i blame the indians working there.

I mean, I didn't know it was this much worse on nvidia, but amd also has this problem to some extent
my rx 580 was able to play 4k 10 bit h265 completely fanless with vram/core clocks idling at 300 mhz
while the rx 7600 will not play a 1080p60 h264 twitch stream without running the vram at 909 mhz and constantly turning the fans on/off even on a single 1080p monitor, no idea why they had to enshittify this.
also the 580 was often able to play 20 year old games at full screen at lowerst power state too, while the 7600 seems to be pretty much hardcoded to run the vram at the highest possible clock as long as you are playing a game in fullscreen, even terraria, makes no fucking sense and again, it's really annoying that they had to fuck this up while it worked perfectly fine on an 8 year old gpu

Is neither an option? The 5060Ti doesn't improve on the raster much and drops the VRAM. The 7800XT, while offering a decent raster bump, loses out on the RT/ML features which might actually justify an upgrade. Gun to my head I'd take the 7800XT but ideally you'd save for a 9070/5070 at minimum.

I'm not sure gddr6 is the reason for this tho
if gddr5 can do the job just fine at 300 mhz, why would gddr6 require 909 mhz to do the same thing when it's supposed to have a lot more bandwidth at equal frequency?
and why would increasing frequency improve stability? it should just be a question of "is there enough bandwidth or no?"

as opposed to the 9060xt having vram ALMOST pegged? there's no fucking difference there, it will still require the fans to constantly spin up and spin down every 30 seconds.

barely, it's only significantly better when it comes to multi monitor it seems.
plus, I don't even give a shit about the power consumption, i'm more annoyed by the fans turning off and on constantly
the rx 580 on the same video playback test consumes 19 watts, exactly the same as the 9060xt, but the vram clock stays at 300 mhz and it can still work fanlessly under this scenario, do you not see the problem?

It draws less than 75% of the power that a 7600XT 16GB needs.
2nd most power-efficient 16GB VRAM card is a good place to be.

Clearly not overkill enough if the fans are kicking in at sub 40W power draw loads, kek.
Your Gigabyte card has a shit stock fan curve if it's turning off and on during video playback loads.

There's only a 5W power draw difference between the 5060Ti & 9060 XT 16GB variants while playing videos.
That extra 5W shouldn't be causing the video card's fans to turn on and off.
You just have a shit card.

>almost any video card with a decent cooler (excluding ultra-compact SFF cards) can passively cool 50W worth of heat load.
1. that's very hard to believe, if your case has like 10 fans at 2000 rpm maybe
2. 50 watts of heat load and vram hotspot are two very different things you know
the problem here is that the fans are set to start at 70c vram hotspot (80c on the reference card, only way to change this is to risk flashing the bios because amd locked out morepowertool), when the room temperature is 30 degrees the vram hotspot sits at 64c idle (which seems to be perfectly normal and in line with most rx 7000/9000 gpus)
if video playback brings the vram clock to 909 mhz, that's obviously enough to increase the vram hotspot by just 6 degrees
my case only has average airflow (nzxt h500i) but that's not where the problem is (after all, the rx 580 didn't have this problem)
the problem is amd fucking up the power table and not allowing any tweaking, stop this fucking cope already "it's your card, it's your case" can you guys just admit amd messed up here goddamn it's tiring.
and the thing is, we are only discussing about h264 1080p60 playback here, let alone 4k60 av1/h265 or anything like that

this is half the problem, and it's a problem that only exists because amd decided to make it impossible to edit the fan start temperature.
>Clearly not overkill enough if the fans are kicking in at sub 40W power draw loads
you clearly have no idea what an hotspot is, you don't fix a temperature hotspot in your vram by getting a better cooler or a case with more airflow, retard.
a 40 watt heatload evenly distributed across the whole card isn't the same thing as 15 watts on the vram, 15 by the pcb and 10 by the gpu die.

Except a video card's fan curve is based on the GPU temperature, not the VRAM hot spot.
Sub 30W worth of heat load shouldn't heat the GPU hot enough to require active cooling.

>What's the point of all that heatsink if your card can't keep the VRAM under 70°C during video playback?
vram HOTSPOT, not vram temperature two very different things (hotspot is always 20c higher than the regular temperature, even checking a single second after waking the pc from a prolonged period of sleep)
the point of that heatsink isn't to passively keep the vram hotspot cool while it's at a high power state, how many times do I gotta repeat this concept for you to understand it

There's 0 real-scenario where the video card's VRAM is running at maximum frequency & utilization to risk thermal throttling while the GPU's running under fan-stop temps.

>vram HOTSPOT, not vram temperature two very different things
That's not what the vBIOS says, the 108°C memory thermal limit shows it's referring to the IC's case temperature, not the Tjunction.
108°C is the case temp when the chip's thermal protection (performance throttling) kicks in.

memory junction is literally the only memory temperature sensor that these cards provide, and it's usually referred to as just "memory temperature", common knowledge since rx 5000.

A VRAM running at maximum frequency doesn't mean it's at 100% utilization (GPU Memory Usage), know the difference.
This is why I asked you to load up HWInfo and play video content, you need more education.

You can make all the excuses for your crappy video card cooler as you want, that amount of metal should be enough to passively cool the VRAMs under sub 30W loads.

yes, and I know the concept of a "bottleneck"
we are measuring the hottest part of the very core of the vram chip, the temperature sensor is literally embedded INSIDE the silicon, not above or at its edge
the heat first has to move to the exterior of the chip, then to the thermal pad, and only after all of that it reaches the actual metal cooler
so how the fuck does the amount of metal you got affect the hotspot temperature? no idea.
>Because you've been insinuating a VRAM chip running at maximum frequency means it's also being fully utilized

Unless you are "talented" you will fail.

The point is Gigabyte Radeon cards are well known to have substandard cooler when adjusted for noise.
It makes sense since they're just recycling RTX heatsink designs to fit with Radeon PCBs, ASUS doing a better job at it.

next to none
drivers could be stable by then (big if)
new cards will most likely not have hardware issues

so as an experiment after all of this useless garbage I ran a live linux distro and tried to see if lact allowed to force the lowest power state like nvidia inspector can
the answer is: yup, works perfectly fine there, i can play all the videos I want (and even old 3d games in fullscreen!) while vram temp stays cool (running at 192 mhz), you can even tweak the video/compute/fullscreen3d/power saving profiles to your liking too
...why the fuck does something like this not exist for windows?

Try changing Windows power settings to energy saving mode.
It changes the power down behavior of CPUs, might affect gpus too.
Worth a try.

of course I tried that already
doesn't do shit.
but yeah i'm now suspecting that there's something wrong with my windows install in general
like this gpu is supposed to idle at 3 watts, but it does 8-10w for me under windows
...but it does do 3 watts as expected on linux
it's like there's just something slightly using the gpu more than it should all of the time but I can't find a cause to this

do water cooler fans never speed up? i always saw water cooling as kind of a meme, dont know how much quieter it actually makes the system when playing a game

it makes the system noisier as you also have noise coming from the pump
and you'd still want the fans to rev up as the liquid temperature increases yes
>i always saw water cooling as kind of a meme
it is.

hard to find a neutral video talking about which is better with some tests to back it up
