Whatโs the verdict?
My old laptop physically broke (screen hinges gave out), and now its prime day, so Iโm browsing replacements. I have an actual computer for real use-cases, this would be for just sitting on the couch or going to my parentโs house or w/e. I already use chrome as my browser.
Standard laptops seem too expensive for what they offer, and frankly, all I want a laptop for is internet (namely youtube), basic apps like spotify, and maybe gimp for making some reaction images. Debatably maybe some torrenting, though its not a thing I do very frequently.
Is a chromebook suffice or is it normiebait shit? Just not trying to spend more than like $200.
>>105838687 (OP)The only good laptops are ARM, sadly you can't use linux with Qualcomm chips. Sure, you can buy MacBook, but that would mean you grew up as a person.
>>105838713I know some of the words in your post.
Does it work well for normie use or not?
>>105838778If you care about battery life and don't mind windows on ARM, get laptop with the Snapdragon chip.
>>105838687 (OP)if you mostly just want to browse the web i think they're great for the price
>>105838687 (OP)e-trash straight out of the factory
>>105838687 (OP)would be great if all of them had 10 years of support guaranteed
Hm. OP here.
Honestly sitting here and milling it over. Realistically trying to think of a use-case that my iPad doesn't fill similar enough if not better. It feels sorta pointless. Not sure if I'm stingy as fuck or just as
>>105838713 said, maybe I just don't need it.
>>105838687 (OP)I'd rather recommend buying a cheap laptop at outlet/refurbished/outgoing model. You can easily get one for $200, and they're far more convenient. Especially if you buy one where you can upgrade the ram and ssd, then it'll also last considerably longer. I bought a laptop and added 16 gb ram (has 4 gb soldered ram so 20 gb total) and switched out the ssd with a 1 tb one, so now it performs at the level of a pc that costs double more or less. Though you'll have to be able to open up and upgrade the laptop, which isn't especially hard but harder than for a desktop.
I have a chromebook with i5 1135g7, 8Gb RAM. It has decent balance between speed and battery life. But it is quite noisy (fan).
you can't increase the swap, you can't add more ram. You can use linux (virtual machine), but it has some bugs (in particular visual bugs) and it cannot run vmware or snaps. linux outside of the VM is unsupported and unmaintained deprecated (crouton).
I had it rooted and used to tinker with it, but i gave up and power-washed it and use it normally.
It is convenient and fast, it boots fast. I use it for studying, reading, python development...
I like it a lot. It gets work done.
Worst things, it doesn't have actual native apps, just chrome, text editor, files browser and video player.
I strongly suggest not going for cheap CPUs, what makes it appealing is its speed for me. No Atom or cheap ARM.
>>105838687 (OP)they are terrible bad:
>no meta key>no caps lock key>no right clickyes you hear it no fuck right click
>only low grade hardware>Linux android/linux subsystem only available if you purchase specific "top tier" laptopt>no slick thin fancy hardwarelike a 2017 apple air is better locking and close to better performant
>if you install the iso its stripped down version of chrome OS without the play storeonly their certified stupid laptops can have access to it like wtf
Browsers are universal technology that works on any os no need to lock your self to an "Apple" like ecosystem
>>105841378>no right clickalt+click, see attached
>>105841378>low grade hardwarthere are i5 versions available
>linux subsystemit has a VM with some things disabled (crostini)
you can install linux outside that VM (crouton), but that involvess enabling developer mode and this reduces chromebook-specific security features.
>ecosystemthere's no actual ecosystem, no native apps. you just use the browser and you can add apps to the linux VM it has (debian stable)
for reference, this is the linux environment it has.
>>105841531nope, I bought it second hand 3 years ago
chromebooks are ok if you can get them for less than $150 with usb PD charging and at least an N4500 or N200, you coreboot them by unplugging the battery and putting them in developer mode, it becomes a normal ass laptop with the super key in a weird place, but I like them, cute disposable laptops with all day battery life
>android in pseudo laptop format
Ew.
