I'm on the fence about getting a Kindle. I already own an iPad, which offers a color display, handles PDFs and comics/manga well, and is decent for reading. However, I'm considering a Kindle to improve my sleep and have less distractions. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I have an old one. It's good. Good battery life, compact and portable, and it's very easy on the eyes at the lowest brightness. And you're right, you're not going to be distracted on it because it only has a specific purpose. So you can take it with you to a park or whatever and just read.

I recently bought an iPad mini A17 pro due to its form factor. I hear its a low spec version of the larger form IPads but goddamn is it good. The battery performance beats any Android I've ever tried. The only thing I do hate about is is feature bloat. But I simply deactivate, delete and ignore most features I'll never use.

It's a completely different place experience readin on e-ink, extremely worth it. And it's pretty much a one time purchased e-readers are so basic devices that nothing breaks and you don't need to upgrade.
But don't get a kindle, get a kobo

facebook marketplace has plenty of e-ink displays.
you cannot load arbitrary ebooks onto the kindle, all the books need to be on the amazon store, and also there has been some drama with amazon removing ebooks remotely and removing the ability to store ebooks on a computer (offline I assume?). And I think amazon has locked down on jailbreaking, it's pretty difficult now.
The HD clara color is the new model that has color (It's probably worth it because it's not much more expensive compared to a B/W display with the same pixel density/features, the $85 kindle has no waterproofing, and no "warm" backlight).
Older models are like $10-20 on facebook marketplace but note the models might be like 10 years old, but it's fine, the pixel density and contrast might be slightly worse, probably not water proof, and no backlight, but that's not really going to give you eye burn or anything.
you can pirate books from libgen.is and it should just work I expect?. However, the kindle might be better in terms of cost because most people who buy an e-ink display end up giving up after 1 book, so the premium of kobo being able to pirate books isn't worth it.
I think ipads have apps (or websites) that are made for pirating mangas, and I think none of the e-ink displays would support (I think there are e-ink android OS's but it's probably expensive), so I think the ipad is just way better for mangas, maybe you might prefer the kobo clara color (if you dropped the $ for it) but chances are the ipad is still going to be a better experience because the colors / contrast / app.

I don't know how easily I can find a definitive source for you - sorry anon.

Both the 'ColorSoft' and the new PaperWhites have a weird vaseline smear around the bottom and side edges. It's a roll-the-dice purchase at the moment. The ColorSoft reviews are probably the best source of this issue. My bf had bought me a ColorSoft to replace my Oasis, and we ended up sending it back because it had both the vaseline smear and the yellowing on the bottom edge. They were super combative about accepting the return, and we had to threaten a CC chargeback.

Amazon have dropped the ball hard unfortunately.

Kindle Comic Converter should be the best option. You can also convert the cbr/cbz files to pdf, but that introduces margins on a screen that's already pretty small for manga.
>>105839825
You can load your own books, but Amazon has been known to randomly delete sideloaded books and they can't really be trusted not to wipe everything if you keep it connected to the internet.
Also some books just don't load for whatever reason and some are constantly rediscovered by the media scanner so you can't keep them in collections.
This at least on the Kindle Paperwhite 5/5 SE.
>>105839937
Kindles will never support epub natively, the claimed support is implemented by converting epubs sent by email to azw or something. Epub files loaded over usb will not show up.

>>105838747 (OP)

Amazon has no incentive to fix these bugs obviously so the problem will probably never go away.
You're right about Calibre though, I've set it up to force some formatting rules and mark all books as EBOK while it converts the file to mobi format automatically.
Another nitpick about the user experience, you have to use the EBOK tag specifically so the Kindle will list the file as a book instead of a document.
Calibre will also fix book covers for all books whenever you load a new book onto the device, but connecting the device to the internet will usually wipe sideloaded book covers again.
You also need to manually delete the /system/Search Indexes directory and replace it with an empty text file to stop it from killing itself after copying a torrented 2000 book collection over.
>>105841157
Kindle has the best battery life and a pretty neat reading experience, but you need manual fiddling to make it usable unless you only keep like 100 books on it. Amazon is generally pretty hostile to sideloading and constantly tries new passive aggressive ways to make it more difficult.
