Here's the thing I don't understand
His codebase is almost inscrutable with magic numbers etc.
But his defense of his giant global array of quest flags is that he "wants people to hack [his] game" and that apparently makes it easier.
But if he wants it to be easy to hack his game, why have all the magic numbers?

That makes it harder to hack because you have to remember to change all the comments as well when you tinker with the code.
Basically he can't use the excuse that he's a solo dev for why his codebase is so hard to maintain because according to him [a significant subset of] his player base is supposed to access and modify the code as well.

The actual issue with Jason's answer is that he failed a shibboleth that ousted him as a no-coder. Any coder worth his salt would have responded to the criticism by saying >yes I could have removed the magic numbers at that part of the code but it's such a small part of the code it would have been more trouble that it's worth
or some other variation of that excuse. Instead he went for a completely unrelated excuse that pretty much revealed to everyone he really has no idea about basic coding practices much less 7 years worth of them and that non sequitur was the best he could do to save face.

It's not, it's very common in single-dev projects. "Good code" is important for either performance or readability reasons, and if you're the only dev readability doesn't matter. 90% of coding "rules" are so that multiple people can work on the same project without killing each other.
