For what purpose? "Proper" analog potentiometers suck (channel imbalance etc) and they were never really a thing on DAPs anyway.
Digital clicky knobs are basically buttons with extra steps. Fiddly, ratty, annoying to deal with, fail more easily than buttons, can't be adjusted quickly (skipping, working backwards when moved too fast, etc).

Why an amp for IEMs at all? I get it if you want a volume knob but the $20 jcally or $50 qudelix have plenty of power for in-ears + $3 potentiometer from parts express should be fine for that. $600 buys you a decent tower speaker pair or subwoofer, a GPU, even an oled screen, which can add a lot more enjoyment to your desktop entertainment than an overspecced and overpriced amp. IMO it's the wrong product category to be spending hundreds on.

You put it between the dac and the iem, you don't need a separate amp. I.E. the exact same way all in-cable headphone volume adjusters work. If your IEMs have a flat impedance (which even $10 earphones can achieve) the frequency response won't be affected.

I'll have you know I just use the volume buttons on my keyboard when I'm at my computer and the pot isn't plugged in. The pot is for when I need to plug into something else that can't adjust the volume as easily or has a high noise floor that I want to attenuate. It's actually useful when you need to use devices other than your personal phone or computer. For one example, there are corporate computers I have to use that have USB ports disabled but I might still want to hear the sound sometimes. Or if I need to listen to something with a line level output, without finding an amp, I can hook up the IEM with the attenuation and safely listen without blowing my ears out. I don't think I need to explain how having an analog pot compatible with anything is different from a usb volume knob for your computer. I actually do understand this stuff which is why I am able to choose the correct pot value and also choose IEMs where it DOESN'T affect the sound quality.
Man, it is funny to me you think I'm "ruining" dacs. The cable with the attenuator can be unplugged like any other. It's not some kind of permanent dick removal surgery.

Where do you get the idea I'm confusing them? I've clearly demonstrated that I understand the output impedance affects the frequency response of a transducer with variable impedance. That doesn't change the fact that a constant load is added by the pot and it's at a level that can't damage the dac/amp.
If you can explain why I'm wrong, I'll have learned something and anonymously embarrassed myself, but if you can't you're just shitting up the thread without actually saying anything. I'm the only one with my dick out here actually using numbers. This is your chance big guy.

I think it's fairly clear that the main point of my post was to consider not buying a $600 dacamp and the dongle dacs are good alternatives. The pot suggestion was specifically if anon wanted a volume knob, which he may not. I should have immediately mentioned the need for linear impedance IEMs with this setup, but once that was clarified there was nothing more to add to that chain.

Your suggestion to use a USB knob instead was reasonable, although that's not a complete substitute as you sacrifice device compatibility and your ability to limit the volume regardless of how software may behave. Also I don't see how it's more convenient or useful than using the keyboard to adjust volume.

My responses to you were all on topic to your replies to me, which didn't have anything to do with dacamp selection or helping the first anon either. I don't care if you think my use cases for my portable IEM setup are cope; they're useful in my life and can be for others too. Other people may actually do things differently from you for good reasons. IRL people use headphones in situations where they don't have custom EQ, pocket amplifiers, 1 ohm output impedance, or bluetooth. I'm sure a lot of people remember how convenient and useful inline volume controls on headphones actually are, and IEMS with good sensitivity + linear impedance are the best possible thing to pair with one. You can get the best signal to noise ratio from any device you may plug in, with comfortable volume and good frequency response.

I'm just here to exchange information and I fully expect this kind of excessive sputtering in audio discussions, but I hope you don't call people retards so easily in other contexts. You'll make enemies while looking a fool and without learning anything new.

The question was never about audibility; this was already studied decades ago.
The real question is how correlated is it to preference, and the answer is that it most likely isn't at all.

Hi /pmp/ I'm in search of advice rather than of hardware.
I'm searching for wireless headphones over the ear that aren't too bad, but.
My use case is that I would like to use my speakers audio jack (6.35mm). I have 3.5 adapters so that part is covered.
Right now I use the Philips SHC5200/10, which I'm fairly happy with them but the quality is really poor. If I listen to anything other than music I have to turn down the bass knob to 0.
I was wondering if I should try to stick to RF or if I should try to move to bluetooth. I'm not seeking enormous quality, just something that doesn't change the audio completely when I move from wired headphones/speakers to the wireless ones.

So, should I stick to RF or try to search into bluetooth too?

using them wired 3.5mm instead of their wireless mode often changes the sound signature BT headphones. your speaker's audio jack likely is not great quality (which means any device you plug into it isn't exactly getting the best sound).

Sup, currently my Studio Beats Buds are starting to wear out and I'm thinking of changing to a different wireless buds.

Thinking of spending equal to or less than $100, I like these but the compatibility for Android is absolute dogshit, hoping to get new ones that have some open software compatability.

I care about quality but I'm not autistic about frequency, the buds I've had for a few years and they work great, but I hate propietary iShit so much it hurts. I just want something that won't desync when I'm out on walks.
Usually it's a bit intense stuff like Ultrakill or just calming grunge Y2K music, I wanna HEAR it.

Hoping there's some options from the sale but not holding my breath, thoughts?

It's not about the noise, it's about the output impedance. Multi-driver IEMs have non-linear impedance so their sound will change from high output impedance. It can rise from shitty wiring, like the front panel, or by design, to to reduce the noise. Some mobos have like 100 Ohm impedance, budget phones usually 20 Ohm.
