Personally I think it's the right move because the public repo is bloated with a million custom versions for unsupported devices. The whole tree needs to be debloated, and long term only open sourced firmware with no binary blobs.

They need to spend more dev time on a better backup solution, it's seriously one of the worst things about using graphene. I'd spend more time bug testing alpha builds if I knew I could reliably restore to stable. Seedvault restore installed only a couple apps I had and none of the app data despite daily >1GB backups.
The better backup services need root access which graphene devs vehemently oppose.
