i use it as a preferential over google, mainly because companies allow it to be used for signup, when services like cock.li are commonly shot down. its clearly a shit tier alternative to me. every email i try to send, it tries to pin on a bullshit advertisement to the end "i sent this with protonmail!". its the type of site to pull up popups advertising their service, you know like all those websites i will immediately close the tab of and blacklist. and its very slow, trying to login to protonmail on phone data is unreliable. somehow, and i really don't understand anymore, this is preferential to using gmail. at this point i only use it because i don't feel like navigating all my services to a different email. there aren't great 'accepted' alternatives. i have tried using cock.li for everything. many sites wouldn't accept it, because it obviously allows some sort of privacy aka not tying a phone number. and then it went down for a few weeks, so i couldn't access shit. and the site has been incredibly slow. if i didn't know for a fact that personal emails would be blocked by services i actually need it for like my bank i would have tried to host my own but it just feels pointless. email just literally does not fucking matter beyond signing up for services anyways

I like their VPN, works fine. Their email is... a fucking email idk it was free with the VPN so I use it for "important" stuff instead of my spam filled google one
I don't care about their other stuff, I tried their password manager and it pissed me off that shit was so intrusive and annoying.

I use tutamail for mails, aegis authenticator for 2fa, firefox for browsing, firefox password to handle my passwords but there is probably a better option. Not a big fan of bitwarden or whatever, are probably better options out there

the best vpn is mullvad vpn and the best privacy browser is mullvad vpn but it goes to extreme lengths so not really usable for normal browsing, use the vpn though its good

Setting up one hosted elsewhere is trivial, just requires a credit card (maybe someone takes crypto?) and an email client you trust. Now, a self-hosted option like Mailcow I haven’t done yet (but I very much want to with the servers I’m setting up). As far as I can tell, it’s going to be kvm/qemu (not sure if there’s something that works with podman/docker) knowledge since you probably want to proxy any connection (for schizo reasons), networking knowledge, and knowledge of the various records that an email server uses. There’s also some jew thing for email trust as a barrier to entry.

Those are reasons enough for me to use it. Sure it's a honeypot but I don't fucking care. I get email, vpn, cloud storage, etc. that just work and are not Google or the other big alternatives.

i use it and it seems to be okay but the problem is not being able to use a third party email client on the free plan with IMAP/POP3. does anyone know of a email service other than outlook/gmail that let's you and also doesn't completely suck?

It's annoying but not arduously so. The real issue with self hosting is that some email servers only accept mail from a domain whitelist, and the only way to get around this is by forwarding your shit through a mainstream botnet email service which eliminates the entire point.
Combine this with EFAIL and you quickly realize that email is just a lost cause. C'est la vie.

It works. Been using it since it first came out for free. Started paying for it since 1 1/2 ago. Can't speak to the VPN, don't really use it. The rest is cool though. Calendar does nothing special. Email + aliases work fine. Proton Pass is also fine, but i also keep most of my more important stuff in my local keypass vault. Never had any issues in all these years with my 3 free accounts + 1 paid.

But then again, I'm not a pedophile or terrorist trying to send threatening emails to state officials.
