I'm on a 3700x and thinking about upgrading. A 5950x would obviously it would be a marked improvement, but AM4 is also a dead platform that doesn't support DDR5.

Nevertheless, buying a 5950x (especially at the price I've found it at) and slotting it into my existing AM4 setup would be much cheaper than buying a new motherboard + new RAM + new CPU. The question is thus: Is DDR5 actually worth it, and how long is a 5950x gonna be good for?

>future proof
no, but it's the best you're gonna get and it's gonna work fine for a couple years, if you wanted to future proof amd 5 would last you at least half a decade (let's hope the tech companies get their shit together and optimize their shit so it becomes a decade)

No. It's so fucking bad I've decided to skip the entire generation of hardware from AM5 to server platforms. FUCK DDR5.

Make sure your VRMs can handle a 5950x. If not, you'll have to buy a new mobo anyway, at which point you may as well move to a new socket.

I’ve been running a 1950x for 8 years now. At this point it’s better to just upgrade to AM5 Anon. You might even get a deal on a 7000/9000 series of cpu.

I have a 5950x and so far I think I'll be fine until am6. Make sure your motherboard can handle the power needs though, and make sure you have a very strong cooler. A 360 mm aio is strongly recommended.

5950x is 5 years old now. its not future proof because the future is already here. its all downhill now.

Why not a 9700x? Less power consumption, basically same performance, albeit lower core count. But most people don't need a ton of cores for their personal systems.
