Best Live USB distro?

I know I can technically do this on any Linux os usb installer, but I want something that's actually built with this usecase in mind. Able to be fully functional (install apps, manage files, etc...) within the usb itself.

Oh, I will primarily use this for small C, Python and JS projects. VScode of course.

I'm pretty sure Puppy Linux does just that.
I one time installed Lubuntu onto a flash drive for shits and giggles. It booted up and I opened up the browser I think. Could probably try that out with other distros, but ideally you'll want a lighter one. If you want to do this you'll need two flash drives and probably disconnect the drive on whatever computer you'll be using to install the OS onto the flash drive. Make sure you get a decently fast one with a good amount of writes.

If you're talking about something with USB Persistence then I'd look at MX, antiX or even Tails.

Persistence on Tails feels more like an afterthought to me and it's designed that way. You can still use it with persistence enabled but it'd be smarter to use another live USB distro.

I wouldn't call it an afterthought, but it's made in a way that the moment your usb disconnects without shutting down properly you lose EVERYTHING, so probably not appropriate for this situation.
