I daily one of those Clevo whitelabel laptops for study and personal use, it's not fantastic but it suits my needs just fine.

One of the problems I have with it is the weak Wi-Fi reception, placing it 20 feet away from a 5GHz is enough to degrade link quality significantly (lag and jitters, link speed drop by more than half), closing a hollow wood door inbetween outright kills the connection.

The funny is that the connection is a lot more stable on my smartphone, signal degrades a bit less across rooms and obstacles, if I tether the connection and use it as a Wi-Fi card, I get better connectivity than the internal adapter, which is crazy, so this made me think about possible solutions.

Mainly I've been thinking about replacing the aging Intel AC9492 Wi-Fi card with an internal AX210 from ebay or Aliexpress, but I'm not sure that would really solve the problem.

I get better Wi-Fi signal if I flip the laptop so that the lower half stays vertical, which makes me think the antennas aren't positioned right (sitting upright?) or something. The cables go out the card and go to the screen half of the laptop, the hinges are attachable plastic and really flimsy, so I'm really hesitant about opening it and damaging the LCD panel or something.

I've seen external AX210-based cards being sold on Aliexpress, but I would like to avoid them if possible, it would be too much hassle since I tend to carry it along with me quite a bit, would also lose a scarce USB port.

Anyone who went through the same situation can share their experiences and how they've managed to fix the issue?

I would be more surprised if it was an issue with the AC9492 and less surprised if it was an issue with the antennas themselves or where they are placed alongside your screen, which has em radiation.

I would honestly suggest just get a new chip and a suitable antenna and replace them both while you have it apart

Laptop comes with its own set of internal antenna.
If it's an antenna issue, you're fucked because replacing it is hard.

From what I understand the issue lies with antenna positioning and there's nothing inherently wrong with them unless they're too short or something?

Would positioning them so they sit upright during normal operation and away from the LCD back structure (towards the edges) alleviate these EM radiation issues?

I'm assuming you meant *9462 wi-fi which is CNVio, in that case you can't use standard cards so you'd have to get AX201 or AX211 as an 'upgrade'.
Even then it depends on the compatibility with your system, so that's up to you to work out. Putting this aside, it's the internal antennas in the laptop chassis that are fucking you over anyway, not the card. What you need to do is grab your nuts and do some DIY.
You need a set of U.FL to RP-SMA leads, which you will somehow route out of the chassis or ideally mount into a blank spot along the side of the chassis.
Then you need to get either an external 'base station' style antenna kit that will sit next to the laptop or some flat antennas that you can adhere to the laptop lid. This is very fucking stupid, but if you absolutely are too poor for another device this is your best bet. Naturally these items are all on Aliexpress for cheap.

>I have a cheap device
>nothing is inherently wrong
>there are signal issues
The thing that is inherently wrong is that it's a cheap device and good RF design is not cheap, it's a sliding scale with some implementations being good enough AND cheap, emphasis on "good enough".

Also post this garbage in /sqt/ next time instead of killing threads

have you have checked inside to see if one of the wifi antennas is just disconnected from the card?

despite the shilling intel wireless things are not that good and the CNVio and LAR are utter cancer

if on windows get qualcomm 9-series card
if on linux get mediatek
get realtek if you cant afford anything but you need a very recent kernel for the good drivers.

intel wireless is fine it's their garbage ethernet NICs you need to avoid

wifi is whore thing you probably wont want any of that

JUST BUY ORIGINAL AERIAL that fits around screen or solder 47mm copper on middle connectors that gives around 7m radius

CNVio is annoying primarily for restricting hardware options, with LAR I can't say I've had troubles which makes me think it's mostly an issue of DFS (I don't use DFS channels). Though it's inherently still cancer that you have zero control over that behavior.
Mediatek is the clear winner when it comes to versatility, given that you have access to advanced modes right from the kernel on Linux, don't have experience with them under Windows though.

2.5G NICs as a whole are cursed, but it does seem that Intel couldn't get their shit together whereas ironically Realtek mostly did.

I bought some Intel to replace a shitty atheros or something in my 2014 laptop years ago and it improved.

That's ironic given that those years were Atheros's 'kingtel' period for both Windows and Linux.
