Someone created the content that you would pirate, and they are not getting the profits they should make from their efforts.

I don't care about arguments saying it doesn't matter, like "I wouldn't buy it if I had to pay for it, so they wouldn't make profits from me anyway". It's still unethical to steal something. You're still taking advantage of someone's work.

The same thing goes for making a copy from someone who paid for the work. Maybe your friend paid for a movie. It's ok to watch it with them, but not ok to make a copy of your own

They are, actually. If their content is popular enough to be listed on torrenting websites then chances are they're already making enough buck. Would you like to try again?

Thanks for the self-concession in the very second statement of yours. Once something is made and published online, it has infinite supply and thus 0 monetary value beyond what people want to donate. So either make something good so people donate, or get paid before making it. Cheers.

I agree, buying games and movies is unethical. Game developers spent their time only to get fired afterward and all the profit from selling games is going to publisher. Same goes with movie creators where all the money after releasing movie goes to publisher and actual people who were involved in creating the movie doesn't get anything.
At this point I think it's only right to pirate anything. Maybe when the law system will protect actual content creators it would make sense to buy anything.

Every argument is this thread can be used to justify stealing from large store chain.
What kind of people steal from places like Wal-Mart? Thats who you are.

Seems you're incapable of the basic mental facility of abstraction. Yes, we all know it's a copy. It's not about that. It's about a product you are taking without paying the price. Physical, digital, whatever, it doesn't matter. What matters is that, by law (and simple human intuition) a person or group of persons have ownership of thing and they set a price for you to pay if you wish to have it.
Ask anyone in the world and they'd agree that taking it without paying that price is stealing.

They are most likely not getting the profits from legitimate sales either unless they self-publish.
>The same thing goes for making a copy from someone who paid for the work. Maybe your friend paid for a movie. It's ok to watch it with them, but not ok to make a copy of your own
So I'm not allowed to pay the publisher either?

This is true if someone made something physical, or say i claimed som shitty ip was mine. you cant take what someone made physically. that is stealing. if its digital then its fair game. cant claim i created the underlying work but a copy of anything is fine by me. if had the ability i could build a ferari and if someone took it it would be theft. ip is bullshit. you cant claim an idea just because you patent it first.

it's true for 99% of the cases, though. you can't refute it.
>It's still unethical to steal something
it's literally not stealing. the person who created the work has not lost a single thing.
it's copyright infringement. if you want to be taken seriously you should be accurate and not use smear tactics.

It depends on what you're downloading, if it's a program that's dependent on services running on the creator's infrastructure and his only profit comes from the sale of that software's license then it's outright unethical to obtain a copy without paying. However that's rarely the case and it only happens to shit made by multi billion dollar companies and one could argue they profit from the data they get about you as much or even more than the license.

I bought lots of content and uploaded it so other people can access it for free. I strongly believe in preservation of media by any means necessary. It should be distributed to as many people as there are that are willing to take it so it can live on.
