i stick with h264 anyway because it's compatible with all websites, computers and phones (nothing else even comes close)

This isn't the case anymore. I can encode using SVT-AV1 at greater than 1x speed, and it'll still produce a better video than x264 at very slow preset, which also takes longer.

You could just try it yourself. Take any video and run it through both, then compare. x265 already yields better video quality, although you have to turn off 2 things when dealing with grainy content.

At the same exact bitrate and encoding time? If so, then I don't believe you. That would mean all other reports of x265 & AV1 being better are false, which is unbelievable to claim. You're clearly either trolling or arguing in bad faith.

Fuck those bullshit high-compression low-bitrate format!
Encoding and decoding speed IS important and i am not using your disgusting slow slop, just to help google save 0.001 shekels on bandwidth costs.

What the fuck are you talking about? how is this about google? I am just trying to save on disk space, I don't give a shit how fast or slow OBS encodes or decodes my video when I save a 2 minute replay buffer at 12k vbr_lat bitrate, What are you even doing that your hardware encoding is having an issue with it? I am genuinely interested

Not my experience. Again, it's faster than 1x speed and that's with using a Ryzen 5600 CPU. Even on preset 8, it produces better video quality than x264 veryslow and does it faster. Are you using libaom, SVT, or rav1e?

H.264 just seemed to revolutionize video in a way that newer codecs just haven't managed to do. Yeah, AV1 is very impressive... at saving the ultra kikes at google pennies.

As usual /g/ has no idea about software. Reminder the main dev of x264 trooned out years ago and is a mentally insane faggot. Reminder I don't give a fuck about patents and anyone that uses "hardware encoding" is a dumb faggot.

t. Developing codecs since 1998.

the av1 encoder in rdna 3 is literally the same efficiency as the h265 one, and they both are just on par with x264 veryslow, way behind nvenc
I have an rx 7600 myself, the av1 encoder is completely useless, what's your use case for encoding av1 with such encoder? very curious.
oh it also cannot encode 1920x1080 without rescaling it to 1920x1088 so yeah lol

this doesn't make any sense
there's no way saving a 30/60 second even 100 mbps clip is enough to bog down a sata ssd
a 550 mb clip would take one second on a 550 mb/s (6 gbps) sata drive, that's a one minute 100 mbps clip
really no idea what the fuck you are talking about here

this makes no sense, what hardware would that be?
on amd rdna 3 cards av1 is the fastest and most efficient codec to encode (500+ fps for 1080p if also decoded through the gpu)
I have a very strong suspect you don't even know what hardware encode is or how to use it and are actually just talking out of your ass

SVT defaults to 10 second keyframe intervals to cause unending pain and suffering to the keyframe extraction autists. It's honestly a good feature of AV1 and you should never change it.

ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -f segment -reset_timestamps 1 -c:v copy -an keyframe%%4d.mkv

for %%s in (keyframe*.mkv) do (
ffmpeg -i %%s -frames:v 1 -c:v copy -still-picture 1 "%%~ns.avif"
)

av1 encoders usually have shitty defaults and often have too little keyframes, yes.
but i don't think i've ever faced any seeking problem with h265 ever, and it's my most used codec by far (both consumption and encoding myself)
>recording
so you are just using your gpu's encoder to record stuff? well that's weird because hw encoders usually do lots and lots of keyframes, sometimes b-frames aren't even supported.
I think you just have something wrong with your obs configuration or sumthing idk, you might also be using a shitty media player or a badly configured one too
