Has anyone ever made their own operating system here on /g/? Even just compiled it without a tool like debootstrap, like doing non-automated LFS?

Terry David did his own OS and he was a /g/ anon.

This anon did an OS too but I don't think he's around /g/ anymore.

There are probably more.

I ran LFS for at leat 5 years, after migrating from, ugh, gentoo
I also made an automated version with a package manager which installed a fully symlinked linux system

Very gay, also he has never posted source code or an ISO.

I'm working on it with a much less "purist" approach, bc I'm just going to use Linux for a kernel at first.
Currently figuring out how to go from kernel to bootable image, then I'll look at shaving down kernel build times.

no I followed the LFS manual and downloaded all tarballs manually
later I made perl scripts for bootstrap and a package manager that automatically detected newer versions
not saying it's decent code, but it worked

I'm gonna come clean, this is also a Chuddha-makes-an-OS stealth thread.
I just finished automatically applied patches that remove rust and bcachefs from the kernel source tree, and setting up the remote build server. Now I'm going to minimize the Kconfig.

Sounds neat, I've never programmed with perl. Is it a good medium between Bash and Python or something?

tbf perl is what I knew at the time from lamp webdev and python/gentoo combo was bloated and slow af.
it's not great but at least it's fast and since I ran it on my server I could do updates without breaking anything because everything was symlinked. this meant I could easily revert to older installed packages whenever something broke unlike other distros

so you are basically working on custom kernel?
yes you could think of perl as being a good medium between bash and python

No, I'm working on a "distro" but one with a more Windows-y or Mac-y "one set of apps" design, including custom apps. It will have kernel modifications but I only have a kernel module (or two) to meme in the startup log planned.
No package repo intended and I'm also going to make some unconventional choices like passwordless root as the default way to use the system.
And once it works I may port it to a BSD so that it becomes a "real" OS in the sense of being independent of (one particular) kernel. I'm never calling it a distro lol.
XML-based packages, that makes plenty of sense.
Not sure what you meant here >>105879775, you could update without breaking things bc you kept multiple versions patching them in with symlinks a la guix / nix, and bc of your perl setup not being updated along?

not sure passwordless root is the way to go unless you trust every single package you ever install / script you ever run
>symlinks a la guix
I glanced this not knowing it and it does seem a little different
my distro installed all packages and versions under
/var/pkg/grep/1.2.3/bin/grep
/var/pkg/grep/1.2.4/bin/grep
/usr/bin/grep -> /var/pkg/grep/1.2.3/bin/grep
then my script can unlink grep 1.2.3 and link 1.2.4
every single thing in /bin, /lib, /etc, ... is a symlink

They go a bit further and put the installed packages under their reproducible build hashes, but then they do the same thing and symlink them in.
It's a nice trick, I might do the same a few versions in.

Didn't think of that, I just binned it as "then you can stop caring about versioning systems and commits, basically making it as free as possible" but yes that implies it works for code + ephemeral build environment (build flags put into build sys invocations) too.

what you retards fail to see (while focusing on looks) is that theres very little genetic diversity within europe, a norwegian isnt much different than a englishman, that in turn is not much different than a german, french and italian in that order.
the continent with the most genetic diversity out there is africa.
