Use Obtainium. It checks for new releases on each app's GitHub page or official website and downloads the APK directly from the source. Simple as.
No need to go through all the drama to get apps included in the F-Droid repos and signed by them. I hate how there are three versions of every app. The real one on GitHub, the F-Droid Signed version, and possibly a Google Play version. I just want to update NewPipe, not switch to the F-Droid fork to use their updater.

The problem is, that privacy products always rely on trust/blind belief. The product can't prove on it's own, that it is working as intended. How to know if an adblocker works? When you see it is blocking ads, it is working. How to know, that a privacy product is not compromising your privacy? You know, when its too late or never.

Obtainium does have a community "app store" in the add tab, to import entries via JSON in one click for Firefox, VLC, MPV, Simple Gallerty, Organic Maps, Shizuku, QKSMS, Markator, UserLAnd, Wireguard, etc, to the list of apps to check updates on, even if not currently installed.

Even a normalfag who doesn't know the names of any of these can browse FOSS stuff through this menu. It's a pretty large selection, with even the same crap that appears everywhere on Flathub/Manjaro Pamac like Sonic Robo Blast 2 and Katawa Shoujo there too.

F-Droid's repos are always behind on updates, F-Droid are hostile to many projects like Brave Newpipe, Uncensored Mastodon/Fediverse clients, Imageboard clients, and not every piece of software like xManager or LINE Messenger has a custom F-Droid repo to add it there anyway. Ditching F-Droid and just updating from the source directly is an easier and superior update management solution.
