It's garbage compared to anything you can buy new today. You can probably get used to it if you use Linux or Windows 7 but later Windows is a problem because it doesn't let you reduce UI text sizes.

1600x900 upgrade is easy enough but can cost as much the laptop itself (since you have to replace the cable too). 1920x1080 needs an adapter board which makes the cost balloon even more.

With newer Thinkpads, you don't need an official charger either. You ought to have a handful of PD-capable power cubes and cables already, and if you don't they're a lot cheaper than what you'd buy from Lenovo.

I bought a lot of laptops and in it was a bios locked Latitude 3420. Other than being scuffed to hell from being in a bin with half a dozen laptops, it's the most complete, structurally sound, and the specs are the best in the lot and it'd be nice to get it usable.

Thinking about a thinkpad but don't really know where to start, meanwhile I have connection's with a friend at Apple that can get me macbook at a good discount 20% and maybe 500 off.

I need something portable light, where I can edit videos extensively, browse the web with as many tabs as I want, and work through long form documents. I know I don't necessarily a lot of processing power for just editing videos and writing in documents but I don't want to deal with any type of freezing or latency which I'm worried about when it comes to a macbook. Im opposed to Mac mainly because I used windows my whole life and I really don't want to learn something new, also, DaVinci Resolve is mainly the software I use for editing. And I think after a few years being able to put a new part into something as opposed to getting something totally new is probably way more convenient.

Tinkering with an express-card eGPU for the x230.

Libreboot masks the intel GPU when booting with it inserted. It's needed to route the framebuffer from the discrete GPU to the internal screen. Works when hot plugging it after booting. Guess I'll have to dick around the libreboot source and reflash.

Anyone running X220 with linux notice some of the blue keys don't work unless youre using certain DEs/WMs (Gnome/KDE work).
For some other WM, 4 keys are only detected by showkey and only in TTY (?)
Using other WM I created udev rules to microphone mute, ThinkVantage, Fn+F8 (trackpad), Fn+Spacebar (zoom)
Some other keys are tricky because xinput does not detect but it can be used in a keybind.
Some others also have internal functionality like Fn+F5 (Wifi) which will toggle wifi with or without a keybind.

I think you could easily have three in a L480/L490 since the 2.5 inch bay has separate SATA and PCIe connectors instead of a single SATA Express. Seems to be the last 14 inch model that could do this.

I bought mine in 2020, and then I bought a second one in 2022 as a spare. It's the best device I've ever had, ever seen and probably will ever see. Especially considering the lack of modern options with actual keyboard, actual trackpoint and proper external ports. I'm using mine daily, and I take it on international trips too.

I really hope somebody does the same kind of project sometime again in the future for an even more modern variant.

My T530 doesn't turn on anymore. I tore it down to the motherboard, tried to turn it on with just the power jack and the keyboard, and still nothing, so I suspect that the board is fried, unless there's something else I can try. The only two replacements I can find (I'm not from the US so no ebay for me) don't look like they have the dGPU. My question is, for a budget of about $200, what's a decent replacement for this aging hardware? Doesn't matter if it doesn't have a dGPU as long as the iGPU is better than the NVS 5400M

owner of over a dozen thinkpads here (over the last 15 years)

from best to worst of the notable ones:

t420s: needed a fan swap and repaste, but after that was exactly what I've wanted in a thinkpad. Reliable, good keyboard, never had an issue.

x230: keyboard modded this guy but kinda wish I hadn't. the original keyboard was just fine. Still my shop computer, running netbsd now. Probably will outlive me.

t61: My first thinkpad. Got me through college and built like a truck. Core 2 duo felt like a timeless processor that wouldn't ever die. It died in a massive flood after being submerged. I have thought about buying a new t61 a few times. This thinkpad idled at the lowest temp of all my 'pads, often around 25C during normal note-taking workflows with the fan off.

there's a gap here before the next in the tier list

x61s: got this because I wanted a small 4:3 thinkpad. Always a little warm while running, and fan tends to go on even if it's not under load. Chassis more fragile than the above and I managed to break it near the expresscard slot. Screen is worse than the others' already mediocre screens.

x200t: also warm, top-heavy (like the screen part weight way too much). Otherwise pretty nice. Great keyboard.

x270: daily driver to this day if it has 1080 panel. Fan stays off if not under load. Very weak processor, comparable to the x230 desu. For text / emacs it's find though. Keyboard also not as good as x230.

e14 amd gen 2: amazing performance : price. Fan never goes on, runs games just great. Feels like an imitation thinkpad made by apple. Metal chassis but that feels like a downgrade from older plastic ones somehow. Died from spilled coffee on the keyboard :( was a good buy at $200 and I'd rec it to a student to this day.

t41: I'd use this if I could put modern internals in it. Ran hot and the CPU was sluggish even for basic tasks. Built like a tank. I think before the t60 / x60 / Core duo line is where you can't run modern OSs anymore

Yeah cuz E series aren't ThinkPads, rebranded IdeaPads forced into the ThinkPad brand by Chinknovo. Only the L series start to register as one, even if they still lack the magnesium chassis. Modern L series are still more robust than your average consumer plastic fantastic laptops funnily enough.

I came across an old T61 Thinkpad. Haven’t booted it up yet, but the retail tags on the bottom suggest it has Windows XP installed. It has a lot of I/O including serial and two ethernet ports (and two ports..? openings? that I don’t recognize). Love me lots of I/O. Makes me feel like it can just plug into anything. I was thinking of slapping Debian on that bad boy and turning it into a portable network terminal kinda deal. Personally, I run an minimalist linux setup (mostly terminal programs) on my T430 to squeeze every drop of processing power out of it that I can. It makes a huge difference in what would be unnoticable gains on a newer computer, but after successfully using it I decided to run the same setup on all of my PCs because there is no disadvantage to removing bloat. The only thing slowing me down is the big fat web browser.
The distro I use is almost completely irrelevant. It's the programs I use, or rather, the programs I don't use.

as for price, I've modded a T430 with WQHD (2560p) IPS screen for about 150$ total (100 for display and 50 for adapter), maybe a bit more with shipping from china
absolutely zero equipment needed, you just open ThinkPad, remove old display, plug in new adapter, connect it to display, assemble. hardest thing is to find where to put the adapter, I glued mine to the display lid
you could likely find a much cheaper FHD (1920p) IPS panel but it's hard to find one of good quality AND guarantee that it will work with the chink adapter

That's a pretty legit price, I'd buy it for that. I used an X13G1 for a brief time, it was a decent machine and better made than the L's I'd had. IIRC with the Gen 1's if it has the WWAN slot you can stick a second SSD in there but you're fairly limited on options. Soldered RAM btw in case you weren't aware.

This is true, the AMD one I have has much worse battery life and isn't noticeably much faster than my old T480 for most tasks. It has the same internal battery, but without the external battery, on a much more powerful CPU. If you loose the screen lottery like I did, the 400nit screen is a necessary upgrade for battery life. Really I only recommend it if you only need a laptop to last 3 to 5 hours or if you really want a cheap shitbox to play PS2 or Gamecube emulators on the integrated graphics.

I'll talk out of both sides of my mouth here and say it's not all about key travel. If they would make the keyboard deck not feel like a trampoline and make the actuation snap a bit crisper, it would go a long way in mitigating a lack of physical travel. I think it's what they've tried to do but are failing at it. The T14G2 I have for work is already nothing to write home about and if it's the "last best" one, it's shit. But I have ridiculously high standards and I type like I'm hammering nails.

Linux works perfectly as well as the various BSDs if you want something else to tinker with. The BIOS can be modded with coreboot and libreboot (on older machines). Old Thinkpads can be bought used for $50 all day long so if you want multiple ones to play with it's a very cheap hobby.
It's worth splashing on the cheapest one you can find (T or X series only, btw) and see if it does anything for you. It's not a hobby for everybody but maybe for you/home/nate/Pictures/cyberpunk/be_happy.jpg

The real reason is that business laptops like Thinkpads and Elitebooks have more parts available, are easier to work on, marginally better built (they used to actually be better built) and cheap. That's the appeal. I already have a gaming desktop so I really don't need a laptop for more than printing documents at the library every so often and when I'm watching a /diy/ video when I'm working in the garage. Sometimes it's nice to take to a friends house and play Battlefront 2 on PCSX2 or Halo 2 Project Cartographer every once in a while. They're cheap beaters.

Figured out how to stop my Precision 7560 Xeon 6-core from thermal throttling, disabled TurboBoost and enabled Cool Fan Profile in the BIOS, hasn't got over 83*C in gaming and that's with the stock thermal grease and without a cooling pad, which are two things I will address soon.

No noticeable hit in performance and my hands don't melt anymore.

That's how intel works now, even on slotted wifi all the digital components are literally inside the cpu and only specific model of radio module is compatible with each cpu gen. Slots only exist on desktop boards to isolate EMI in a metal box. Intel wifi slot is merely shaped like m.2 but it's not compatible at all. You can't put realtek or qualcomm etc in one nor can you put intel-only wifi in amd board (but intel still makes normal wifi cards too for amd and old computers)

It's better built physically. Less flex, keyboard doesn't make odd noises, cover comes off easier. Keyboard marks on the screen are still a problem. Software-wise there isn't any "modern" "standby" to worry about. Touchpad is smaller so it's less of a problem when palm rejection doesn't work.

I back the T440p as well, feels great after changing the keyboard to a backlit model and the trackpad to one with clickable mouse buttons. Also added a SATA M.2 drive for the OS, upgraded the WiFi module and CPU to latest/highest available for the system as well. Haven't changed the display but I feel no need to.

155U, not H? The graphics on the EliteBook are way better, and the multi core performance (compiling) is too, with better power efficiency at load. EliteBooks and ProBooks are good, as long as you don't get that dog shit "Sure View" privacy display which ruins the viewing angles and colors even when you're looking at the screen straight on. You can check the laptop's config with the serial number, or notice the defective-looking screen in pictures.
IIRC both models had replaceable RAM so you could look into getting them with less RAM and upgrading them. Also, remember to check the refresh for that AMD CPU (8840U) and the higher limit versions (7840H/HS, 8840H/HS)
