>>105887696T14G1 is worse than the T480.
T14G2 was the last T with the 1.8mm keyboard depth (some say the last good one)
T14G3 was the first with the 16:10 screen.
T14G4 was lolrust Intel 13th gen. Skip
T14G5 saw the return of socketed RAM (but soldered wifi lol); /tpg/ consensus it's the successor to the T480 but aren't off corporate lease and being dumped en masse on the market yet, thus too expensive for most of /tpg/
I'm less clear on the AMD models, but suffice to say they're better than Intel at every generation - but every nerd knows it, there's fewer of them on the used market, and you'll pay a premium for them.
Worth upgrading from a P51 in $currentyear? It's got the i7 7700hq and the M1200m discreet gpu. I haven't ran into any issues with running the software I want to(yet) but I'm starting uni soon and I dunno if Solidworks still supports the old Quadro

>>105891777If you already have a dead 6-cell and someone happens to be selling an unused original 6-cell 68+ (eg for X270) you could buy it and swap the cases. Easier to find original 68- than 61-series for some reason.

>>105901766It's garbage compared to anything you can buy new today. You can probably get used to it if you use Linux or Windows 7 but later Windows is a problem because it doesn't let you reduce UI text sizes.
1600x900 upgrade is easy enough but can cost as much the laptop itself (since you have to replace the cable too). 1920x1080 needs an adapter board which makes the cost balloon even more.

With newer Thinkpads, you don't need an official charger either. You ought to have a handful of PD-capable power cubes and cables already, and if you don't they're a lot cheaper than what you'd buy from Lenovo.

Im opposed to Mac mainly because I used windows my whole life and I really don't want to learn something new, also, DaVinci Resolve is mainly the software I use for editing. Tinkering with an express-card eGPU for the x230.
Libreboot masks the intel GPU when booting with it inserted. It's needed to route the framebuffer from the discrete GPU to the internal screen. Works when hot plugging it after booting. Guess I'll have to dick around the libreboot source and reflash.

Anyone running X220 with linux notice some of the blue keys don't work unless youre using certain DEs/WMs (Gnome/KDE work).
For some other WM, 4 keys are only detected by showkey and only in TTY (?)
Using other WM I created udev rules to microphone mute, ThinkVantage, Fn+F8 (trackpad), Fn+Spacebar (zoom)
Some other keys are tricky because xinput does not detect but it can be used in a keybind.
Some others also have internal functionality like Fn+F5 (Wifi) which will toggle wifi with or without a keybind.

I bought mine in 2020, and then I bought a second one in 2022 as a spare. It's the best device I've ever had, ever seen and probably will ever see. What was the idea behind this?
>>105927806They had to market to the gay and woman Macshit crowd (that will never buy a Thinkpad anyway) by making laptops too thin to accommodate a RJ-45 port - but the need for wired Ethernet is so common, and in conjunction with a reduction in poets, they made a dedicated proprietary port so you wouldn't have to use up one of your two USB ports for a USB Ethernet adapter.

My T530 doesn't turn on anymore. I tore it down to the motherboard, tried to turn it on with just the power jack and the keyboard, and still nothing, so I suspect that the board is fried, unless there's something else I can try. The only two replacements I can find (I'm not from the US so no ebay for me) don't look like they have the dGPU. My question is, for a budget of about $200, what's a decent replacement for this aging hardware? Doesn't matter if it doesn't have a dGPU as long as the iGPU is better than the NVS 5400M

>>105931850Modern T14 isn't any less durable than T480 that /g/ keeps kissing its feet off.
If you want the newest 14" Thinkpad that still has a magnesium roll cage and spill holes, that's T430 but it's way too old for modern standard.
>>105932060The T14g2 has L-tier flexibility and is incapable of reaching sub 50 temperatures. I returned mine because my palms were always moist and because it felt flimsy.
Anyone know where I can get a chicony backlit keyboard for the t480? I tried searching on ebay but could only find darfon or liteon.
owner of over a dozen thinkpads here (over the last 15 years)
from best to worst of the notable ones:
t420s: needed a fan swap and repaste, but after that was exactly what I've wanted in a thinkpad. Reliable, good keyboard, never had an issue.
x230: keyboard modded this guy but kinda wish I hadn't. the original keyboard was just fine. Still my shop computer, running netbsd now. Probably will outlive me.
t61: My first thinkpad. Got me through college and built like a truck. Core 2 duo felt like a timeless processor that wouldn't ever die. It died in a massive flood after being submerged. I have thought about buying a new t61 a few times. This thinkpad idled at the lowest temp of all my 'pads, often around 25C during normal note-taking workflows with the fan off.
there's a gap here before the next in the tier list
x61s: got this because I wanted a small 4:3 thinkpad. Always a little warm while running, and fan tends to go on even if it's not under load. Chassis more fragile than the above and I managed to break it near the expresscard slot. Screen is worse than the others' already mediocre screens.
x200t: also warm, top-heavy (like the screen part weight way too much). Otherwise pretty nice. Great keyboard.
x270: daily driver to this day if it has 1080 panel. Fan stays off if not under load. Very weak processor, comparable to the x230 desu. For text / emacs it's find though. Keyboard also not as good as x230.
e14 amd gen 2: amazing performance : price. Fan never goes on, runs games just great. Feels like an imitation thinkpad made by apple. Metal chassis but that feels like a downgrade from older plastic ones somehow. Died from spilled coffee on the keyboard :( was a good buy at $200 and I'd rec it to a student to this day.
t41: I'd use this if I could put modern internals in it. Ran hot and the CPU was sluggish even for basic tasks. Built like a tank. I think before the t60 / x60 / Core duo line is where you can't run modern OSs anymore
>>105933431You clearly never owned T520 and T530 those shit on every one you listed
>>105933454have wanted a t530 but haven't gotten to it yet. What makes it better?
>>105933431>Feels like an imitation thinkpad made by apple.Yeah cuz E series aren't ThinkPads, rebranded IdeaPads forced into the ThinkPad brand by Chinknovo. Only the L series start to register as one, even if they still lack the magnesium chassis. Modern L series are still more robust than your average consumer plastic fantastic laptops funnily enough.
>>105887360 (OP)I came across an old T61 Thinkpad. Havenโt booted it up yet, but the retail tags on the bottom suggest it has Windows XP installed. It has a lot of I/O including serial and two ethernet ports (and two ports..? openings? that I donโt recognize). Love me lots of I/O. Makes me feel like it can just plug into anything. I was thinking of slapping Debian on that bad boy and turning it into a portable network terminal kinda deal. Probably just gonna use it for web browsing and command line stuff, since itโs definitely not crunching any numbers with the Core Duo it has in there. Your guysโ thoughts?
>>105927806This makes the MAC-address stay the same for a computer, rather than the MAC-address being dependent of always using the same USB-dongle. It's often a soft-requirement in corporate environments.

It's nice as a terminal or writing machine or as a poor man's NAS. Playing videos on it makes it heat up like crazy.
>>105934074Had a feeling those openings were for some kind of expansion card. And upon further inspection you are right! Itโs a phone line. Makes me happy because now I can screw with old dial up modems, probably. As for the VGA, yeah, itโs a VGA port. Stupid serial connection looks so similar.
>>105934253lol you sound like a kid. anyway, the phone port is not for connecting a modem. the laptop already has a modem in it. the only problem is that it is a "winmodem" that requires you to run windows to use it. maybe there is a better solution nowadays. idk.

I want to buy a new battery for my x200s. it still has the original battery from 2008, and its capacity is at 40%. Furthermore I live in perpetual terror of it exploding on my cock.
Any tips for buying a new battery? I'm looking some third-party ones on amazon, and they seem fine.

The only thing slowing me down is the big fat web browser.

Thinkpad T14G5
Intel Core Ultra 5 125U

>>105956522The real reason is that business laptops like Thinkpads and Elitebooks have more parts available, are easier to work on, marginally better built (they used to actually be better built) and cheap. That's the appeal. I already have a gaming desktop so I really don't need a laptop for more than printing documents at the library every so often and when I'm watching a /diy/ video when I'm working in the garage. Sometimes it's nice to take to a friends house and play Battlefront 2 on PCSX2 or Halo 2 Project Cartographer every once in a while. They're cheap beaters.
>check discussion threads

what other fuck ups have dell/lenovo/other companies made that affected people who paid more?
>>105962841Yoga line laptops will always have nice IPS screens, better than the cheap budget shit TNs in the standard non-Yoga models that many IT departments buy (and thus end up on the used market).
Lenovo's L series laptops retained socketed RAM for several generations past where T series eliminated it (though newly rediscovered for the T14G5).

Figured out how to stop my Precision 7560 Xeon 6-core from thermal throttling, disabled TurboBoost and enabled Cool Fan Profile in the BIOS, hasn't got over 83*C in gaming and that's with the stock thermal grease and without a cooling pad, which are two things I will address soon.
No noticeable hit in performance and my hands don't melt anymore.

EliteBook 845 G10 vs Thinkpad t14 g5
Elitebook has 32Gb RAM, 256gb SSD, AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7840U, refurb and costs 609โฌ
Thinkpad has 32Gb RAM, 512gb SSD, Intel Core Ultra 7 155U, refurb as new and costs 709โฌ.

I installed LXQt because it was a pretty old device and the widi wasn't scanning and I had to edit the connman settings to get it to work.

>>105887808>soldered wifi lolThat's how intel works now, even on slotted wifi all the digital components are literally inside the cpu and only specific model of radio module is compatible with each cpu gen. Slots only exist on desktop boards to isolate EMI in a metal box. Intel wifi slot is merely shaped like m.2 but it's not compatible at all. You can't put realtek or qualcomm etc in one nor can you put intel-only wifi in amd board (but intel still makes normal wifi cards too for amd and old computers)

I'm about to buy a T480s with 24GB of RAM because 16GB on my T14G3 isn't enough. Also my G3 has a tonnnn of issues. Is the T480s actually decent or is it still just chink garbage?
>>105969234I got a T14G1 and the FPR works just fine, no reason why it shouldn't work with the T480
>>105970254It's better built physically. Less flex, keyboard doesn't make odd noises, cover comes off easier. Keyboard marks on the screen are still a problem. Software-wise there isn't any "modern" "standby" to worry about. Touchpad is smaller so it's less of a problem when palm rejection doesn't work.
Are you sure you won't miss the CPU performance of your T14?
>>105970472The T14 is fast as fuck but I've already finished my backlog of games on it and don't really need 16 threads to open some Krita files. I also hate typing on this piece of shit, the keyboard is worse than a fucking macbook.

>>105971002Typical /g/ contrarianism? They are generally regarded the best of their generations from what I know.
I need a thinkpad for coding and occasional gaming (old strategy games nothing serious)
Specs of my current work computer are 32GB RAM and CPU is an AMD Ryzen 5600G so the Thinkpad I am gonna buy should have equal or better performance.
What model has the best price to perfomance ratio?
I am fine with paying up to $1k
Is a X390 ( i7-8665U) with 16GB of RAM for $150 a good deal? Only going to use it for shitposting and word.
>>105972107That's plenty of machine for that use case, and the price is good. As long as the screen is 1080p it'll be IPS. I'd look for something else if it's the 768p TN screen, or it "conveniently" doesn't list screen specs at all, because odds are that's what it'll be.
>>105972107>>105972427meant to include this for reference
>>105971002The T440 has some weird issue with the trackpad buttons that triggers some anon's autism. I don't see anything wrong with the T480 as long as it's procured at a fair price
>>105971002T440p is the last one with a socket CPU while T480 is the last one with the dual batteries. Whatever OP that it got copied from is a contrarian.
>>105972653Both are usually overpriced, difficult/impossible to find OEM batteries and other replacement parts for.
You're much better off getting the newest T/P14 you can afford, instead wasting money on shit like IPS mods and trackpad replacements.
>>105967674155U, not H? The graphics on the EliteBook are way better, and the multi core performance (compiling) is too, with better power efficiency at load. EliteBooks and ProBooks are good, as long as you don't get that dog shit "Sure View" privacy display which ruins the viewing angles and colors even when you're looking at the screen straight on. You can check the laptop's config with the serial number, or notice the defective-looking screen in pictures.
IIRC both models had replaceable RAM so you could look into getting them with less RAM and upgrading them. Also, remember to check the refresh for that AMD CPU (8840U) and the higher limit versions (7840H/HS, 8840H/HS)
