Dense ITX cases are cute, but suck to build in and upgrade, and ITX stuff in general costs more and comes with annoying limitations like too few USB ports on the back panel.

I prefer compact cases that still fit standard-size components, eg Lian Li A3.

You are obviously a mongrel; it isn't a solution for cafes or lounging in Starbucks. Why would I use a trackpad or overheating laptop with a shabby keyboard if I could take my 'outer outside on a porch and still get the same results? I have a small mechanical keyboard, and small mouse, I don't care. All laptops suck, I can replace my mini computer, or display anytime I want, and everything is portable.

Ok, look at prices of m4pro 16 inch, they start at $2400. While same MINI pro costs $1500. 16 inch OLED screen is about $250. Plus you can use linux AMD RYZEN 395+, those machines are around $1400 now. Also I can just upgrade my machine without buying new screen, keyboard or mouse.

I think we all make the small form factor mistake at least once. then we try to save others from making the same mistake. a mac mini is easily the best sff you could buy in terms of size, looks, and price. I literally tried to put a 4090 in a tiny case I saw optimum (a slop tuber) use and it ran hot and was a huge waste of money.

Small generic pc's are a weird compromise for people who dont care about best perf, best value, or small pc's.
Actual pcs allow you to install whatever is out on the market to achieve your desired end goal, and small purpose built minipc's are tiny, they can be lifted on one hand and they do tasks that dont require a lot of watts.

Mini itx is sorta aesthetics focused at the cost of everything else. It's not portably small, its more expensive, it requires compromises on parts you can use and how watt hungry they can be, requires dongles for more usb ports.
Good for men with a lot of money and desire to impress ladies I guess?

I like the idea. Small computer. But the current trends in graphics cards and x64 CPUs is much more power which is a bad match for smaller systems. mITX motherboards are too limited as well. When the system is a bit slow for gaming use, say after 6 years, it is less useful in other roles due to the lack of expansion slots.

Overall it is hard to justify unless you are okay spending a good deal more money for a harder to work with, louder and less flexible set of components.

how about making a case that fits only matx motherboard but is equivalent of an atx case in terms of how much there is space to work around with components?

atx case has 7 pci openings
itx doesnt really need more than 2

so make an atx case with the principle that everything is like business usual but give it only 2 pci openings and the case ends after those (there will be likely a power supply underneath the itx board, after those 2 slots for GPU (make it 2.5 wide for a good measure to fit cooler perfectly)

so now the case height should be about equivalent of 4 slots less of height than it was while the design was atx

and what about the depth of the case? or width? unchanged, the only idea was to make sure there is no unused space that comes from motherboard choice

I dont think there are such case

wrong, fucking idiot. larger machine has a larger surface area so more dust can collect, assuming uniform volumetric dust distribution. assuming same fan flowrate, the small one will accumulate the same amount of dust on it's filters as the larger one, but with smaller filters they will clog faster.
tl;dr cases should be even smaller and you clean them every day.

If none of these apply then of course don't go for one

I build systems as a side hustle. Nobody wants full tower cases anymore. The ONLY thing that goes into builds is the GPU. No hard drives, just NVMe. No dedicated expansion cards, just use what's on the mobo. Etc. Micro ATX cases, Micro ATX boards, full length GPU, tower cooler/all in one+rad, NVMe, some fans to direct air flow. That's it. Full tower case makes zero sense in this day and age.

Small gaming machine is just a useless hobby for nerds.

Small PCs in general are crippled by cables. Why can't my Pi0W connect wirelessly to a monitor? This should be standard tech by now, I should tap my mPC (micro-Penis Computer) to the side of a monitor and instantly have it display.

Small PCs are nice but useless because they don't do anything other than sit there.

I only buy blower GPU's so I had no issues with fitment. RTX A4000 fit, which also means my 4070TiS would have fit fine.

why would there be any cases where small form factor is a benefit compared to a full tower or a laptop, retard
small is by definition significantly more limited, you can't shove HDD storage or any amount of extensions in it

just think about that for one second and you'd figure it out. It's smaller, so it's more portable and takes up less space to stoee
>but but computer shouldn't be portable buy a gaming laptop or or
you allowed to decide its not an appealing option but if there weren't people using them then the components wouldn't be selling. Also it's not the 2000s people don't justify their purchase by how many hard drives they can cram into a case.

>portable DESKTOP
just think about that for one second and you will realize that you're a retard
it's no more portable than a full tower, you still aren't going to put it in your backpack and you still need to haul a display and all the peripherals
what is the magical real world use case your delusional brain can conjure where it has any benefits over a beefy modern laptop or a normal tower?
>but if there weren't people using them then the components wouldn't be selling
just because some people prefer fashionable small cute PCs doesn't mean there is any real world benefit beyond looks

I think you're being intentionally dense, you could literally just google what people use them for if you're actually curious. So far I've seen people mention travel, living in dorms that have limited space, or working in places that already have peripherals like front desks.
>just because people prefer fashionable small cute PCs
I don't know why you think that isn't a genuine benefit. If you build it properly you wont't have any downsides to having a SFF. Yeah, you can't have double 4090s and 8 3.5" HDDs in it, but that's not a deal breaker for 99% of people. Some people are just willing to pay a premium for something that looks nicer and is smaller, even if they aren't getting some exceptionally unique use case out of it.

I built an (lol)Lan, Steam Machine rig for low-to-medium resource-intense games, because fuck sitting through the same splash screens everytime I want to play an RPG.

I still have a high-end Windows gaming rig, along with a PS5 Pro for the odd game, but the quick-resume function of Steam OS is fucking awesome.

the reason SFF shit is so expensive is because nobody buys that shit, they have smaller production runs because they are niche.
if anything it only exists because some people are extremely autistic about packing as much computer as they can into a small box, not sure why manufacturers aren't pushing it because it costs them less in materials and they take up less space in storage/shipping.
turns out people like having room for upgrades and not having to buy an entirely new case because their new graphics card is 1cm longer.

good laptop is better by a mile
how do you even travel with a desktop, what the fuck kind of cope did you find
>living in dorms that have limited space
if you live in a japanese cell housing, that could be an argument, but there's no dorm that doesn't have 80 cubic inches of space you're saving with small form factor
>working in places that already have peripherals like front desks.
sure, I grant you this. Small factor PCs are made for weird receptionists that somehow aren't provisioned with a station by the company, I hope you're happy with winning the argument here
>If you build it properly you wont't have any downsides
right, you're saying yourself that you gotta work AROUND the shit form factor to get any benefit over a normal tower, so you're arguing against yourself here
>Some people are just willing to pay a premium for something that looks nicer and is smaller
that's what I'm telling you and you keep arguing with me about it: zero benefits over a tower or a laptop except for looks

Yes and no;
With ATX, engineers have a lot more space to work with, and aren't as confined for board real-estate. If sales were the case, then mATX would be hella expensive. In fact, low-end ITX is downright cheap compared to m/ATX equivalents.

With ITX, you're suddenly adding complexity to the design, as engineers have to compensate for the sheer lack of space, hence why you see m.2 daughterboards on the high-ends. By all means, you're not wrong, but it's definitely not the sole reason.

mini itx pc's elegance is so far behind actual small form factor units

redundant metal and plastic everywhere taking space because its a generic pc, fans everywhere 1cm away from the case walls, inefficient cooling fins placement for the components

most of the advantage without the cost premium or cooling and noise weakness.
