Somehow there are people who believe, this is an "improvement" compared to stock android.

when you say "stock android" do you mean aosp or manufacturer roms? because I dump what is considered an "improvement" to manufacturer roms in the toilet ever morning.

Is the obsession with shitting on GrapheneOS in here just retards trying to convince themselves that it's not even worth trying to have a private phone?
GrapheneOS is probably not perfect but it's the best there is. I don't use it and don't feel a need to cry in basket weaving forums about how I'm too smart for it.

This is a baseless claim, but it has been repeated often enough, that people started believing it. And thus, the cult of Graphene was born.

1. No independent audits
True. GrapheneOS hasn’t undergone a full third-party audit. It’s open-source and reviewed by the community, but a formal audit would add credibility.

2. Support ends with Google’s firmware
True. Since GrapheneOS relies on Google’s firmware for Pixels, once Google stops support (typically after 5 years), GrapheneOS can’t provide low-level updates like kernel patches.

3. Proprietary hardware (Tensor, Titan M2)
True, but this applies to all modern phones. The Tensor SoC and Titan M2 are closed-source, making them "black boxes." GrapheneOS mitigates risks but can't inspect or modify these chips.

4. Baseband/modem firmware is proprietary
True, and not unique to GrapheneOS. All mainstream phones have closed baseband firmware. GrapheneOS uses strong isolation (separate memory/I/O) to reduce privacy risks.

To be verified by whom? The British Raj? If you have doubts, how about you review the source code yourself instead of crying like a little bitch on a technology forum where people routinely use FOSS operating systems that have not been audited by any "authority".

>You are right, we should just blindly believe the claims of the developers and community
Whomst are you quoting? No one is forced to trust anyone blindly. The way the proprietary components of GrapheneOS are isolated is completely transparent and open source, as is the code surrounding the Titan M2.

Custom roms are all about trusting developers. Even if open source, it is practically impossible to perform a full audit of an operating system due to its size and time/expenses involved. Such an audit would take years (literally millions of lines of code), and by the time it is finished, that OS becomes obsolete. So, trusting developer is paramount.

With that in mind: GrapheneOS puts the following intro everywhere, including Twitter, Reddit, Disqus, Matrix and their own website:

GrapheneOS is a privacy and security focused mobile OS with Android app compatibility

The message is: come over Android folks, we've created a new mobile OS with an added bonus: you can use your favorite Android apps! Beg your pardon?! GrapheneOS IS Android, that's why it is compatible with Android apps. Without Android, there would be no GrapheneOS.

This statement is not just wrong, it is deceptive, as GrapheneOS developers know well their OS is Android albeit modified.

Next, without commenting on all security and privacy enhancements, GrapheneOS developers do not believe that a user should have administrative rights. As we know, every operating system on Earth provides administrative rights, be it Windows, Linux or MAC. As such, GrapheneOS is NOT suitable for power users.

Also, setting aside the credibility or rather the lack of credibility of Graphene devs:

Pixels are the least secure devices on the market, because unlike any other OEM, Google designs CPU/GPU, security chips and the corresponding OS that is running them. Other OEMs don't get source code for processors' firmware, they get binaries only from chip manufacturers. So, unlike Google, they can't hide their data grabbing activities there. In Pixels, Google can do just that, which makes that mini-OS Gapps on steroids with the added bonus: everything there operates unbeknownst to AndroidOS.

This. You can't secure Pixels with any custom rom. It will be like putting a lock on a tiny window next to a huge entrance door that is wide open.

It's insane, how pixel users have been brainwashed by disingenuous and/or incompetent developers, and by Google itself.

Pixels are the least secure devices precisely because hardware there is controlled by Google, unlike with other OEMs, who get binaries only from chip manufacturers. At least, one can uninstall Gapps, but you can't uninstall software supporting CPUs/GPUs and Titan. That software is neither dependent nor even visible to Android, which makes it a perfect repository for tools that destroy privacy and security.

Degoogle by buying a $1000+ Google device. You can't make this stuff up.

>The modem is "isolated", whatever that means
IOMMU is a very porous isolation barrier which requires trust in the SOC manufacturer.

Compared to a separate modem and SOC from different companies it's weak shit.

You still trust Google for security with a custom ROM, but you don't need to trust them for privacy (they aren't going to use a system/firmware backdoor just to slurp data for advertising).

anyone who tells you they can 'isolate/protect' Android from whatever is going on on processors' level is either clueless or if a developer, a FRAUD. Whatever is going on on processor's level has been isolated by design before GOS ever existed, and it is a bad thing, because processors are hooked directly into hardware and RAM and Android doesn't know what's going on there, because it is isolated.

There is not a single phone in the whole history of the world, that doesn't have proprietary blobs to call/sms. It is impossible and illegal to have open source modem that connects to the network.
