Is this the ultimate archiving solution for my family pictures and videos ?
Will it outlive me and my children as advertised by millennials ?

Honestly, pic related
>cheap
>small
>stores easily

I find packs of these hdd for cheap. As long as you go for the 3-2-1 method of archiving, you should be good (3 copies on different storage devices, 2 locations, 1 cloud)

>Early in 2022, Verbatim changed the formulation of their M-DISC branded Blu-rays. These new discs could be written at a faster rate than the previous ones – 6× speed instead of 4×. The new discs also had different colouration and markings compared with older version. Later in the year customers accused Verbatim of selling an inferior product and deceptive marketing.[16] Verbatim responded that the new discs were a further development of the older discs and should have the same longevity, and that the technical changes therein were responsible for the altered appearance and higher write speeds.[17] The updated M-DISC currently sold on the market uses the same metal ablative layer (MABL) metal oxide inorganic recording layer used in many of Verbatim's regular Blu-ray products.[18]
Normal BD-Rs are a third of the price and will probably last 20 years minimum. Realistically if the data is important you will want to back it up then. M disc is mostly a marketing gimick but they still serve a purpose.

I still can't figure out if I need to buy one of their drives or the one I have works fine. There is no reason it shouldn't.

How can you guarantee any electronic device will last 100 years? For one, the capacitors will dry out after a couple decades.

i researched a little for a while and i think any drive would be able to write them. what i was not sure if with a random drive you get the 100 years of data lifetime, but i would say that no
>>105905862
some capacitors are very long lasting, while really expensive or bulky you can dealt with that, or just be prepared for an easy recap, i dont know
but yeah i think i was overselling when i said that the unit is guaranteed to last 100 years, it is reinforced and made to last, but i doubt it has that guarantee
its also fucking expensive, like 10x a normal unit

They stopped making those legitimate. It's a random chance if you'll get a legitimate one or just a fake one.

Hey look there it is.

Some anon in another thread recently posted a chart showing how SSDs last quite a long time if left in low temperatures. Like keeping it in a fridge at 5C would make it last 35 years in theory.

That's still nothing compared to m-disc but I've often wondered if I even want my anime rips to survive that long. In 30 years they'll be like 8k res rendered at 144hz with ray tracing.

No. M-Disc only applies to DVDs, and you need a time machine to get US MIC M-Disc media. Blu-ray is at least more stable than DVD-R, but you should just implement the backup trinity with HDDs and cloud rather than dick around with overpriced unicorn horn bs.

Modern tape needs a special climate controlled room. The only economical way for individuals to use tape is to rent. Like restic to Amazon Glacier or whatever.
