In my experience most communities that used to be on Matrix now are on SimpleX >>105910912
I stopped using /g/ for a bit and its true there does seem to be a massive downturn in the popularity of privacy focused software
I still use it, selfhosting synapse and using element client. It's shit in many ways but all the basics work well enough that I keep using it. I've got it bridged to d*scord and IRC when I have to interact with those and it works well enough.
Development seems to be funded by europoor governments these days, which is nice that it'll probably still get improved and won't just die like many other projects. I wish they'd work more on discord parity features though like voice channels and server roles. Even stupid shit like custom emoji (in element, some other clients support it already but break other things) would be nice to bleed more people off of shitcord.

Nobody really cares. And it seems like too much trouble.
Federated stuff is inherently a terrible idea (for usage of normies, not technical stuff which is all you people care about and why nothing takes off. hi tox), nothing that is federated will ever take off, ever.

you don't have to use federation to use matrix. you don't even have to self host a homeserver if you're fine with just using someone else's (which is what you do anyway by using literally any service that you don't self host).
