I think this looks nicer than nano, all it needs is syntax highlighting

Well, no accounting for taste, makes GNU nano the better choice.

Windows hasn't had a first-party CLI text editor since going 64-bit in Vista because the original Microsoft Edit was 16-bit and apparently they never figured out how to do a W16onW64 subsystem. Also it's dumb but typical for Microsoft to give this the exact same name as an existing orhter product of theirs.

I want to agree with you.
In an ideal world everybody would use Linux, specially for server and remote management.
Unfortunatelly, in the real world, a lot of servers run on windows and are managed through powershell command line, with many tools requiring editing of text based config files and windows didn't have a built in terminal text editor.
Sure you could install nano/vim/emacs but not having something by default can be a problem for machines with strict 3rd party policies.

Luke Smith already did that to zoomers 5 years ago. The only reason I understand linux to the degree I do is because that guy put me down a rabbit hole of sysadmin level tinkering.

I just don't get why they waited until fucking 2025 to make a CLI text editor. This should've been in windows more than 20 years ago by default.

Microsoft is shitting themselves seeing linux is slowly getting popularity and are trying to adjust.

I use ‘mg’ which is one of the micro emacs’ derivatives.
It’s also the only editor that worked telnetted into a windows machine if you set a
TERM to ANSI.

The original edit had this annoying quirk where if you opened the file pulldown the CPU went into a busy-wait. Didn’t matter in the olden days, but now it’s noticable.

Also, microsoft being a software company, you’d think they’d be able to (1) release the actual source code of the original edit
And (2) have the capabilities in that source code to do a search and replace on AX and replace it with RAX to upgrade it to 64 bits.
The current one is more about signalling to certain groups of people by using rust that they’re the “catcher” with their bloatware release of crap.

Go developer here.
Unsafe is often… very often… used to do things that the paternalistic language designing faggots couldn’t figure out how to let you do some things syntactically that you fucking need to do all the time unless you’re writing comp sci 101 toy programs.

Anothet thing unsafe is used for (relatedly) is the safe way is usually a performance and work nightmare, so just do it with unsafe and make it perform 100x better.

This may sound silly but I don't like in vim how the word list replaces all the text on the screen. Maybe I am an idiot and didn't read the manual and it can be changed but the first time I tried it was like nope.
Thankfully the only thing I really need spell check for is the journal I write so it is not a huge deal.
I was thinking of trying the console word perfect for Linux port but I don't really need a full word processor.
