Why does linux have worse compatibility than macOS on ARM?
Literally >everything broken vs >everything works.
How the fuck did we even get tot his point?
Anonymous No.105922683 [Report]
Probably because Linux is a community project and the overwhelming majority of people use x86? I’m sure arm is great but when we’re talking about a niche of a niche you’re gonna struggle to find people willing to dedicate time to something very few people will use. I’m sure as arm based laptops become more popular we’ll see improvement though.

How much ARM hardware exists that's worth running it on? The Windows ARM laptops weren't exactly a big hit. Not to say I'm not interested in owning such a thing in the future and running Linux on it. But at this point you shouldn't expect much.

Because no one wants to use arm Linux devices. They have infinitely more driver issues than x86 devices due to ARM being primarily used for toy computers whose manufacturers have no desire to upstream their cancerous hodgepodge drivers and devicetrees.

Because different versions of ARM are mutually incompatible and the ARM ecosystem as a whole is a chaotic mess of unstandardized bullshit. Corpos love to abuse this, which is part of the reason they use ARM so much.

Apple doesn't have to worry about this because they use their own custom ARM architecture.

This is the reason why x86 will never die and ARM will forever be custom tinkertranny projects that hold every user back.

That doesn't mean that x86 will die, it'd be like saying that Minix has completely supplanted Windows due to its presence in the IME.

a lot of shit out there using arm and linux for best part of two decades, maybe longer. did you forget arm's primary uses as embedded microcontrollers?

the only reason arm exists is for compute per wattage. if you have an macbook m1 you know that CS is better on it that pretty much any x64 device out there, even better than QC surface devices.

the drive for arm based solutions is purely around laptops and battery life. Apple was able to drive compute/wattage upwards with the m1/m2 to the point where intel basically had 0 response to it for the next 10 years. Surface saw this and freaked out and immediately started QC development with Carina. I think they basically had a desktop QC version that was meant for devs? Apple built the m1 around macos to allow easier control of sleep states and PEP constraints. Microsoft is trying to get there

Anyways point being no one really cares about battery life on linux from an OEM standpoint so no one is really driving that development. I dont really see that changing until x64 laptops are no longer a majority of the market and LF just has to adapt.

Source I worked on Surface for 6 years

>Why does linux have worse compatibility than macOS on ARM?
Because ARM has been the ISA of choice for Apple's entire product range for the last 4 years, and they've had experience with it in their mobile products for well over a decade. If their shit didn't work well on ARM then they wouldn't have replaced their entire x86 lineup with ARM, would they?

Linux, on the other hand, doesn't need to run well on ARM because most linux users don't use ARM-based hardware, so there's not a lot of incentive to improve its support. It's that simple.
