Why did mobile phones go from sovlfvl little companions with many crazy designs to shitty rectangles?

normies unironically use smartphones as a daily driver, they can't use proper computers. So manufacturers cater to them by providing bigger rectangles to ease them watching 6 second clips with their bloodshot eyes.

because people thought they wanted the internet in their pocket, which would've been great if stuff like reddit/x/4chan/youtube/twitch didn't exist. Social media makes them shitty.

yes actually. Steve Jobs explained this to you back in 2007. keyboards suck because they take up half your space and theyโ€™re there whether you need them or not. plus theyโ€™re moving parts to break and reduce water resistance.

I bought nokia 3310 (2017 edition) for my Dad and he's happy using it for calls (he talks on the phone a lot). It's a nice little thing to hold in your hands. For everything else, he got a smartphone.

Was that phone actually any good or is everyone just being retarded? I'm not talking about the build quality meme, I mean as an actual phone was it good and nice to use? What would you do for internet?

She's a K-Pop star or something, the Nokia didn't have colour screens in 2000, the text is pasted from Wikipedia without even removing the [citation needed] and you're still getting nostalgia-baited lmao
That phone was absolutely indestructible though, I'll give it that.

Rather than being a device with which you call people, the goal became the reduction of barriers in the way of consumption and the smartphone would be the ever-present vehicle for it.
By only acknowledging one mode of interaction, the touchscreen, you are always immediately reminded of consumption and start building literal muscle memory relating to the spending of money on slop.

Did mobile internet not exist back then at all? How did you even live your fucking life and I don't mean sharing shit on social media I mean finding out useful information if you're going somewhere or currently out and lost. Did you answer emails only when you got home? What did you do to procrastinate if using public transport? What did you do whilst taking a long shit?

>finding out useful information if you're going somewhere or currently out and lost
You had that information before you left. You either had a map that you would reference, directions you had downloaded, or if all else failed you would stop at a place nearby where you were originally lost and ask them for directions.

>Did you answer emails only when you got home? ]
Yes. I still do that...

>What did you do to procrastinate if using public transport?
You read a book, listened to music, or just enjoyed the scenery.

>What did you do whilst taking a long shit?
Typically brought a book to read. If you had nothing then you would have to read the shampoo bottles or some shit.

I say this with all sincerity, the internet has brought so much but for daily life it has completely fucking eviscerated normal life.

You didn't need 'internet'
You had actual phone calls and texts with people.
And often those would relate to meeting somewhere irl.
You had internet at home.
On your computer.
When the internet was actually good.
No social media.
IRC, ICQ, forums with people who on average were much smarter and willing to engage in actual discussions than people online today.
Old internet filtered most of humanity.
Not to say there weren't still retards online, but even the retards then were of a higher caliber.
And even then, we were apparently relatively retarded compared to the pre-Eternal September people.
