No, this means that 3d applications on the web (games running in your web browser (yeah, as if), 3d modelling software and stuff that wants to use the GPU for compute will run faster IF they use the new API. It has no effect on normal sites.

Just like WebGPU, it will probably be abused by cryptard sites to make random visitors mine FOTMCoin unknowingly.

Yup. WebGL had basically no support for GPGPU, so it couldn't really be used for crypto mining. WebGPU, on the other hand, is explicitly designed to allow GPGPU (apparently it's intended for AI uses), which makes it perfect for crypto mining. That's one of the reasons why I'll be disabling that shit as soon as I can. Besides, I think that web pages shouldn't have access to your GPU anyway. if your program needs to use the GPU, it should be a native executable.

Web pages need access to your GPU, how are they supposed to render expensive CSS animations and DOM recalculations on progressive Web apps?

WebGPU is cool but there's not much use case because people still opt for using the software on their OS instead of completely doing everything in the browser like WebGPU insists on.

The author of the retarded article is (or was) CEO of Firefox. She also raised her own pay from like $900k to >$4million because it was "unfair for her to have to live on so little". Meanwhile Firefox is down to below single digit marketshare.
