how the fuck do people get started in cyber? I know I'm years behind the boom but I still see openings all the time but never get anything back when I apply. is it really just helpdesk/networking people sliding into those positions or what. inb4 no fake jobs/ no one is hiring/ its over(it never even began) / pajeets took them/ your not a real tech worker
>>105930822they dont. its a fake field.

got hired in blue team recently (9 months ago) and it's mostly just responding to stupid CrowdStrike alerts from idiots installing some malware on their machine, azure alerts from idiots trying to sign in from their personal device with iCloud Private Relay on, or resetting phishing e-mail clicks
Frankly, I think the 'fun' of the field is overblown by scam artists online. But it doubled my salary ($18/hr to 80K a year) so I'm dealing with it
Work in helpdesk/datacenter/IT support for a few years, try and do some systems tasks, get some certs (CASP+ was surprisingly helpful, but I'm probably confirmation bias-ing myself), and apply to a bunch of positions while changing your resume a bit to include key words from job descriptions
Because of indians the industry (IT as a whole, really) has become a numbers game instead of being about merit. Have to hope the position you're apply for is real (fuck ghost jobs), isn't auto-denying people so they can import another street shitter, and is willing to train instead of taking in someone who got laid off at a better company
>your profile was viewed by 1 company this week

>>105932157I mean, I fully believe that every once in a while my profile is actually read by companies who want to find out if I have 3 years experience with the exact brand and model of machine they're looking for expertise with.

I was recently lamenting my choice of career because I assumed that every software developer was making $500k at the very piss poor least. I assumed that money literally falls from the sky for you people and after reading these threads I'm really surprised. Should I be more grateful for what I have or did I actually screw up anyway?
>>105932350you make less than FAANG gives to new grads but FAANG is a very small portion of SWEs and tech workers in general

I haven't even attempted to verify it but I believe this on its face.
Has anyone had a TPM that actually knew the tech and was able to do the stuff they're supposed to do (and are supposed to demonstrate in an interview) like lead technical tradeoff discussions and shit?
minor blogposting but i wanna know what anons think i should do next.
i pretty much wasted my twenties with neetdom due to depression but was always into IT as a kid so i learned a lot on my own.
managed to get an IT internship with the govt a couple years ago while i was taking college courses. dropped out because i hate school but managers liked me enough to hire me on permanently. problem is i started at a low grade (gs-5) and i'm in my mid 30s. I'll eventually automatically move up the gs scale to a decent pay (gs-12/13) but it's going to take a few years. i have a security clearance but i'm frustrated with the low pay because i know i have the IT knowledge to be making more now.
should i go into the private sector or just suck it up and stay in the govt?
>>105933255GS moves slow compared to other government related jobs. If you do consider contracting since the pay might be better. Only issue is that you need to double down on investments and other retirement goals. Clearly if you just started working at 30-40ish then you failed in alot of ways but again you can catch up pretty easily with a higher paying job.
>>105933255I'm not american, but, are you retarded? you are knowledgeable and have have security clearance, and you keep wasting your time in a low pay govt. job?
also, that sounds like a question for /twg/ IMO
>h-hi anon. I can get you a job if you're comfortable sucking my asian girlcock  :right_index_finger: :left_index_finger:
what do you do?
>>105933273i guess it could be worse. if i stay in the government for 20 years i'll have a good retirement setup and still be under 60 at which point i could go contractor instead
>>105933345/twg/ is full of codemonkey jeets
the situation is a bit more complex than it seems and it's not just about money. contracting has its own set of stresses especially with this new admin. my directorate was considering not renewing contracts for a certain IT support role. they ended up renewing only one company's contract out of three. one of the guys rejoined from one of the companies that lost the contract but he had to take a 20% pay cut.
i'm waiting for my clearance to be upgraded to TS and then i guess i'll take a serious look at the private sector. outside of the pay the job is good and the agency is awesome so that's why i'm conflicted.

Surely they would at least hold the actual phone interview before ghosting me, right?
>>105932350Software developer is one of the most common jobs now. A few years ago, it actually was the number one job in Colorado. More of them than cashiers. More than truck drivers. More than nurses. Most software developers don't work at tech companies. They work for boring, mundane companies, doing boring internal intranet crap. FAGMAN and startups have altered the public's perception of what's a middle of the road white collar job.
Pic related is based on paycheck data rather than what employers report on surveys. Most people have no idea just how many software developers there are crammed into non-tech departments at non-tech companies, getting paid ok but not great salaries. Tech companies report high salaries to make themselves look prosperous so investors will put money into them and employees will want to work there (even if their starting salary is less than expected). They also aren't a good reflection of software development as a whole since most software development happens at non-tech companies. The programmers working on the search function for the weekly ad on Kroger's website aren't getting rich.
>>105934002Phone interviews are done by AI interviewers now. You don't speak to a person. The AI asks you questions on various subjects, analyzes your tone, the speed at which you respond, stress levels in your voice, and decides on the correctness of your answers. No one listens to the recording. No one reads the transcript. Scores are inserted into the HR application tracking system. If they want to hire someone, they'll run a query for those with the highest scores.
Some of these systems require you to have your camera on, they say to ensure you're not cheat by using AI. But it's also used to grade your body language and look for physical characteristics they prioritize.

>it's literally just confirmation from the province that you are in fact unemployed and are ok to make a claim to subsidize onboarding or even outright have the province pay the employee's wages for you for a while

I'โm seriously considering putting "self-employed" on my resume as a freelance technician or something. I donโt want to get burned by background checks if they look at my ROEs. >>105943956You gotta up your game, I get ghosted before I even get a reply
how do you get past HR in interviews when you're an autistic fuck that cannot help being honest and direct? (aka the complete opposite of the lying cheats they like).
i am just trying to get a small position as a software developer and interviews are usually just one with HR and one with the team lead. sometimes one interview with both. i always do well with the technical part but i feel like i get veto'ed by HR because they think "i am not the right fit for the company"
WELCOME TO UTWG, HOW UNEMPLOYABLE ARE YA
>>105944039I had the same issue. You need a friend/family to work with it. Being direct and honest is a benefit if you work in tech so you could be forward with that by saying you like to resolve issues before they begin to appear by letting people know about the issue through the works proper reporting procedures. Its alot of fluff for saying you hate that things are broken.
What they likely assume is that you get your nose into to many things which can break alot of expensive shit. Its good that you do but you need to know management/procedures/coworkers exist for a reason.
Many other sites on job interview questions. Getting good at reading aloud would also help with interviews from my experience.

>>105944082I'm being ghosted by factory jobs and aren't strong enough to do construction labour jobs.
>>105944102>What they likely assume is that you get your nose into to many things which can break alot of expensive shit.my problem isn't that i break stuff and only work solo. i feel like they just don't want anyone that could be asking questions about why some parts of the codebase are held together by craft glue.
another problem i have is when HR asks me about my last job (i got fired from there after 5 months). the real reason is because my boss was a cunt and felt personally attacked by someone who asked about getting some time to refactor critical parts of the code base (it was close to falling apart). every other person at the company was dead inside and just did what they were told, no more.
but HR does not want to hear you blaming a past employer. even if it's just indirectly. i cannot lie myself through that. my brain is incapable of doing it.
>>105944137don't put any education higher than highschool if applying to factory jobs, otherwise they know you're gonna jump jobs quickly
i unironically got ghosted by a mcdonalds that i live 5 minutes away from
are fast food jobs high tier now on the wagie list because you get free goyslop during your shift?
>>105944216well, what did you put on your resume? they probably want desperate people that will endure everything without quitting or getting another job.
>>105944194At that point I may as well cut the resume altogether and hope a cover letter's enough.
>>105930231 (OP)Just got an offer for 25% higher than my last salary, and 12.5% less work hours (40 to 35). Dont lose hope anons
How are people getting an interviews? I'm probably more competitive then more than half the midwits applying for the same job.
>>105944228you have to tailor your CVs if that means redacting or embelleshing to the job, retard monkey jobs aren't gonna hire someone with a degree that will walk the second their preferred job lines up for them.
>>105944356What if I tell them I'm transitioning out of tech and am looking for a stable job?
>>105944361Depending upon the company they might see you as management competition or labor with AI/Automation now on everyone's minds.
You can have a larger resume for IT but you should omit labor jobs unless its electrical related. If there is no carry over skills then do not have it on there.
>>105944336>How are people getting an interviews?i suggest not really questioning it. sometimes HR just doesn't want to do any work on the day your application comes in. sometimes you get filtered for no reason by their review software. sometimes your application drowns in a lot of others sent at the same time.
most of the time, your application isn't actually being seen by a human.
quantity > quality, just to actually get someone to take a look at your job application.
>>105944336Same as the other anon but another aspect. You can re-apply even if there system auto-filters. You should re-apply again even if there interview went nowhere. The other company positions might be open for you. Job apps are not black holes were you are screwed for life if it goes nowhere.
>>105930257>You're a human being, not a role.

now, after covid, a lot of unnecessary IT jobs were cut and the market was flooded with potential employees.
>>105945446>The worst part is when I mention it to people they get confused why I can't find anything.that really is the worst. in germany, politicians and the industry have gaslit the entire populace into believing there is a lack of (software) engineers. the average joe cannot believe an engineer cannot find a job. in reality of course, it is not a lack of qualified people, it is a lack of senior developers with 10 years of experience in one particular framework willing to work for entry level wage. the industry just wants an excuse to hire third worlders for minimum wage that will push breaking changes directly to master if permitted.

Why yes this company that you say is fast paced and stressful is my dream job and I won't leave as soon as I find something easier for the same pay. everyone i know still in the field is doing the job of 2 or 3 people while duct taped to some shitty tools by management and it makes me super scared of the bubble popping, i think it'll be the catalyst for another great recession
>>105946287>they're trying to play musical chairs with investor moneytech really is no different from any other industry right now. every company is trying to maximise quarterly numbers for shareholders and private equity investors. no matter if it will kill the company in the long run.

>>105946403Oh yeah, I fully expect another great recession, I just think it's gonna be tech companies getting bailed out that instigates it. No way anything Gemini/OpenAI/Anthropic/CoPilot are doing now is profitable, and most companies are just hooking up an API to it are using imaginary investor money.

How common is Scrum in software engineering and IT in general?
>>105948182Some project managers have Scrum among other certs related to there shit but this is IT. I hear its good to get for resume padding but i hate renewals for certs. Will I be able to get an entry level helldesk job if I finish my Network+/Security+ certs or should I just start looking for plumbing apprenticeships?
>>105952490Yes those 2 certs should land you a job pretty easily for helpdesk. But plumbing pays more than IT if you run a company. If you have no goals of making a company that you own from the ground up then avoid the trades.
>>105952527I've worked with computers my whole life so IT just feels more natural for me, but I just want a future proof job that pays a livable salary and I think at this point even on-prem datacenter work will probably get automated within the next decade. But people will always need tradies.
>>105952564As it stands in IT you still need people to touch the equipment. They have been trying to automate us and outsource us through the cloud from the very beginning. Hey you're a tech guy, you can use one of those new fangled LLMs.
ive been working as a DBA for a little close to coming up on almost 2 years now and gotta say it isn't really what i was expecting.
the landscape has changed so much in the last 20 years (obviously). the biggest task my indian boss (at a white person company in the US) wants me to do is try to automate the monthly patching process. but we dont even do the updates, the infrastructure teams do, and we havent been consistently updating SQL Server across 2 decades, so it's only windows OS patches. so essentially my only real task is to somehow automate the detection of down databases post patching and email us.
my boss is not that much older than me (i'm 35) and he is constantly throwing around buzzwords like automation and python like i'm in some sort of developer role. super annoying to be honest.
any tips on landing another DBA role without having an extensive amount of experience doing super deep shit? we dont really stand up or re-configure environments that often, once they're good to go theyre good to go.

They expect you to lie. When that's the case, what you write literally doesn't matter. If you meet or exceed their requirements, then you're bullshitting. If you're just under their requirements, then if that's a lie, your real qualifications must be especially poor!
There is no winning!
>>105964026Don't wear a tie unless you're also wearing a jacket. It's acceptable to wear a jacket without a tie for a more casual look, but do not wear a tie without a jacket unless you want to look like you sell phones at a mall kiosk. It's summer, so unless you're very fashionable and you know how to wear linen (and you're not), skip the jacket.

>>105959570CA is a high price shit show. It's a company's market so you'll be getting filtered by others should things not work out.You want to avoid being missreable like these fucks and you need to follow the job and ensure you land in place with other companies in the area you could work for or be willing to move.
TL:DR do it.
>>105964339This is good advice, thanks.
Garden state, here I come.
>>105960272No offense, but I'll pass.

>>105930231 (OP)I have two algo interviews next week. I havent done this shit in a year and trying to cram 15 leetcode problems a day. Its not even 10 days till i got laid off and i already wanna cry from this job market
>>105933635i would without further questioning
Fired this month, how do I get a job?
Should I work for UPS or as lifeguard for at least some time?
>>105930231 (OP)Plebbit CS reddits are imploding right now. Everyone is so mad that it was a scam. The truth is, that anyone with a brain could've seen it coming. First of all, you could educate yourself for free. So it was blatantly obvious that a college degree is a scam. How are you guys even getting interviews btw? CS has been confirmed a meme degree.
>>105965940Here's another funny joke: freelancing.
It was simple, easy years back. Just sign up on a site, upload a portfolio, apply directly to jobs or advertise your services, you're good to go. Now it's more, have active clients, have pending jobs to finance future ones, bid on a job (as in put in some $ just to get seen by a recruiter), and only then will you get the job. Every freelancing app is the same. You may have the skill, but there simply is no entry point for beginners who are broke, and the apps are oversaturated.
