China wants renewables because their current goal is semi self-suffiency and to make themselves more durable in the face of the global economies ups and downs. If the straits of malacca get cut off, if the middle east gets bad enough the oil stops flowing, etc. they want a energy source at home. That and chinese air pollution is fucking horrendous.

You can't into basic math if you think that about solar. Even just as a user for residential solar, it just make sense.
Wind doesn't make sense tho.

Solar depends on the scale applied and where you live in the world. Makes more sense the closer to the equator you are due to more guaranteed sun hours vs. the perpetual overcasts in my area.

In europe, the globalized energy market makes renewables (especially those that can't ensure constant continuous electricity production) less viable. While solar and wind produces all the time at no cost (e.g no fuel to buy), the markets consider those for peak demand (Listed in the SPOT energy market and Real time balancing market, compared to nuclear power-plants listed in the long term market). The base demand is ensured by other electric powerplants that can deliver a constant supply of electricity all around the clock. So most of the time electricity made by solar and wind isn't being used at all. The way these projects get money is by being part of the capacity market, which means they provide surplus electricity that may be used during peak demand.

Also, economically speaking, in europe, return on investment for a solar/wind powerplant is around 4-6%, while most oil/gas powerplants are around 10-15%. In a capitalist system, it makes no sense for private investors to pump money into solar or wind.

That's because the loudest voices on /g/ can at best echo 10 year old memes. That being said, the way China is currently generating solar is still incredibly stupid and the way to combat this is by generating electricity closer to its consumer and not in a desert.

Most people think that solar/wind is only good for peak load, when, with all the advances that lithium/sodium ion batteries have had, you can use solar/wind + a battery station for base load. Since the battery station can be charged variably, and discharged at a constant rate, it prevents the grid oscillation problem from occurring.

It was bad, but nowhere close to historical British cities that relied entirely on coal.
This image is wild. Germans spent half a decade bombing the UK and killed fewer people than smoke killed because the wind did not blow for 2 days straight...

money isn't an issue atm for the chinese and the ecological problems caused by production and maintenance of wind and solar are less bad than the ecological problems caused by consumption of fossil fuels. far less rivers are being polluted, far less people are getting air pollution illnesses.
wind and solar are the lesser of two evils.

yes, they are
they are just npc who do whatever they are told to do without evaluating it first
there was a time when the chinese killed all the birds because they thought they were agricultural pests. what happened was a disaster because the grasshoppers were actually pests and really damaged agriculture, and their population exploded because the birds that originally ate them were all killed
currently they are doing the same thing, building solar panels and batteries that consume a lot of energy and emit a lot of pollutants, only to gain.... little energy? lol

Wind can have good eROI, solar stills is useful because ROI also matters.
All the problems related to wind or solar come from the analysts from an inversion company doing their usual too optimistic ROI forecasts trying to show better financial returns than are possible.
